D Doc, Water what u plan for the top half of the Canning sounds logical and commonsense (i figure you are not a government beauracrat) with the bonus of 12kg less weight -- 18 down to 6 Elsewhere in the outback on the Connie Sue, one ride we had, we had bike probs and were about 50-60km short of our destination at Warby which we had banked on with water supplies. Myself, dinner was a cup-a-soup with half a cup of water left in the camelback (the high salt content just made my dehydration worse) - I'm a dickhead One of the other riders Peter the next morning had a severe headache. At Warby there was like 4 camels drinking the well dry. I know i drank 6ltrs, a 2ltr can of tomato juice, 2ltr can of fruit juice and over 2ltrs of water before i felt quenched. Lesson learnt Sno
I have proof there is still beer out there............................... or it may be dingo or camel piss by now if they found it. A couple of spare tubes as well. 23 04' 16 28" S 123 13' 3306" E P Prick, --- from the front page of the Herald Sun, the London Times, the Hebrew Herald, IL Globo and The Truth (for those who are 100 and over - what a shitty paper it was). -------- A nobel prize awaits a world famous archaeologist Professor Prick for his scientific proof that in fact there is beer hidden on the Canning Stock Route. For years independant AD riders have suffered the withdrawl symptoms of no beer on c.s.r -- well thanks to Sir P Pricks scientific discovery this will give great joy to Australian AD riders. We envisage a huge stampede of riders from around the world decending on WAs CSR - mayhem guaranteed. Looks like the military will need to be sent in to help keep things under control. So next time you open that well lid, some will have water and some will have golden light bursting forth. Ahhh praisseeee the lord. Go Pies
One of the attractions of Canning and the remote outback is the ever present risk that something very serious can and does happen. KEEPING YOUR HEAD IS VITAL snowypete
Den, Probably right where the pin is on the pic. Only about 200 mm sand over the top. I still have 4 x 20 litre plastic jerry cans of fuel buried along the Canning somewhere. Two, I know where they are, but the other two are beside trees that look like every other tree. I did mark them on my POS Magellan gps, but it is buggered and last time I was out there I had no idea which tree. May be a little stale by now though. Right here.................
A blatant well deserved plug to www.screensforbikes.com. Just got a screen for my DR and couldn't be happier. Great finish, quality, price and easy to deal with. and while i am at it...oztrim in Ringwood Melbourne.. for those riders ie: DR650s with seats as comfortable as concrete, for around $200 on your own seat.......comfort 2 U. And not so well deserved . In the US you can buy a brand new '13 DR650 for $5945 (US $) out the door in West Virginia (cycletrader.com). In oz we say what a great bargin we are getting for $7490 a '13 demo ride away!! hmmmmm Sno
Dirt Doctor pulled his radio cord out of his helmet just seconds before RB (lead rider) warning us of a bad corner coming up, he used the bash plate on the 640 as a bulldozer blade bloody Lucky to stay on somewhere near well 33 on the CSR http://youtu.be/VDdzXwOZaYs

Wow, this sounds like my sort of ride! Unfortunately I'm doing a unsupported Cape York trip at the same time otherwise I'd love to come. I'm actually planning to do the Canning ride next year, so will follow this tread with interest. Have an awesome trip.

Hi Ed, Good talking to you the other day - here is our itinery for the ride, starting August 04 at Broken Hill - have the goal posts a bit to help John from Newy. Previous trips suggest its easier to underestimate time, so distance covered most days are conservative, with a few long haul days to buy time if needed. So the plan is to leave cars, trailers, donkeys, camel trains etc at BH Lake View caravan park. Sunday 04/08 at BH, 05/08 - on the way to Birdsville, 06/08 - Birdsville with possible start into the Simo, 07/08 - Simo 08/08 - Mt Dare 09/08 - Alice 10/08 - spare day (alice) 11/08 - Kings canyon 12/08 - Olga & the rock 13/08 - Alice (bike service r& r) 14/08 - The Tan 15/08 - Billy and the crater Next 8 days doing the big can down to Wiluna 23/08 - wiluna 24/08 - the gun 25/08 - warby 26/08 - the connie sue 27/08 - ilkulka 28/08 - 31/08 - the anne beadell to coober at coober pick up from the depot pre-arranged tyres, oil, spares etc And then thereafter assess how things are going, probably a lazy ride back to BH via Oodnadatta track or via the Gamman ranges and the Flinders and then home. Then put the bike in the garage, padlock the door and not go near it and then recover from monkey butt. sno
