It has a built-in gps. And an accelerometer so you can also see the g-forces from acceleration and braking. And it also has WiFi built in, though the Smartphone App to use WiFi is not out yet.

But the neat thing is that the Montana, 62S/78S and a few other models can be used as remote controls for the Elite.

It's unlikely that Garmin will phase out the Montana. I've had a Monterra for the last 6 months and strictly as a gps, I prefer my Montana. But of course the Monterra is much more than just a gps.

What other functions does it do?

What, the VIRB or the Monterra?

If you mean the Monterra, check DRTBYK's review of it here.

hmm. Interesting. A veritable geocaching addict and all around Garmin aficionado told me that the Montana would be replaced by the Monterra. While they are very similar on the outside, they ain't too similar on the inside. I'm going to ask him where he got his information. He has both, among other models as well.

I spotted a marked down Montana 600 at a Berlin sporting goods store the other day -- marked down to € 240 (reg € 400). I nearly grabbed it. The sale price works out to ~ $350. Maybe my dog will buy it for me. :evil

That is pretty cool. I held off on the GoPro 3, now they have the 3+, but the Garmin seems like an interesting piece of kit.

As you can probably tell, I like it a lot. It's not perfect yet but it's got a lot of potential and the basics are there - it has a good lens with lens correction built in so pictures and video don't have to look fish-eye unless you choose that. I really like the more streamlined shape and the fact that you don't need another box around it unless you're going underwater with it. The accessories seem to be made of much better plastic than the GoPro stuff which I seem to break with great regularity.

The video display, WiFi, gps, accelerometer, and other features are icing on the cake.

But the iPhone app mentioned in the box and literature is not out yet. Garmin says it's gonna be "real soon now" and I have no reason to doubt that. Because I can use the 78S or the Montana as remote controls, I'm happy with that for the time being.

Here's another video I shot at night.

I have more videos and a thread on the camera here.

The Virb has a few minor issues, none of which affect me. The biggest is the missing app described in the manual, but if you have a Montana, you've got a remote control right there.

    I definitely recommend it.

Came across some interesting books recently searching the Indigo site. "Back Roads of Ontario - by Ron Brown", "Backroad Atlas of Eastern Ontario". Does anyone have these? Are they worth purchasing?
