I think you will find that fuel economy will be affected quite a bit by the weight of the rider, hence the variation in MPG from rider to rider.

This is not a KTM.

I've kept records of mp(UK)g since I got mine and I've never dipped below 50. Always low to mid 50s. You know, 53~57ish. I have seen over 60 occasionally when taking it easy. I'll restate that's UK mpg, bigger gallon an' all.

I average low 40's. But that is 90% urban commuting. Arrow tune probably doesnt help matters either. At least car drivers can hear be coming.

I seem to be getting the average with my roadie. 40-45 depending on how I ride it. LV exhaust but on the stock tune.

All this talk about fuel consumption got me thinking. I plan on getting the arrow exhaust with the corresponding fuel map this summer. My objective is to get a nicer sound and lose a few lbs.
Currently I am averaging mid 40is MPG on a 2102 model that was fabricated in the end of 2011. (I dont know what map it has, but I am happy with it. )
Spirited riding gets me into the low 40is , commuter mode, upper 40is.

The question is will fuel consumption degrade significantly with the arrow upgrade? Will the driveability be affected? Currently I am happy with throttle response, linearity and fuel consumption, I am concerned all of the above might degrade with an upgrade thats going to cost me close to 1K.

Seriously, my Tiger gets about 45mpg. But it never even dawned on me to try to figure out what kind of gas mileage it could get before I bought it.

OP has a DR650. If he's planning a RTW trip he should just keep it. Cheap to run, easy to fix, no electronic gadgets to break in third world countries. If it breaks he could just leave it by the side of the road and fly home.

 Just so you guys know, the OP, dljockey, is a friend of mine. I know him because we live near each other and we both have DR650's. He asks me about my range and fuel consumption on my 800XC all the time. I get 42-44 and never any more than that. I know I could do better, but where and how I choose to ride I am surprised it does that well. Dljockey's concern with mpg is a concern of range.He wants a bike like the Tiger that can do more highway than the DR and still allow him to explore FS roads. He does not want a bike that gets any less than 200 miles to the tank (200 plus reserve preferable). He knows of the Safari tank, but I also told him people are getting much different mpg than me. He wanted to know what you guys were getting. I didn't understand why he was making such an issue out of it either until I went on a daytrip with a 1200GSA and he rode all day without refueling and I had to refuel twice. Dljockey takes multiday trips with guys with various bikes all year round. I recently did a day trip with a group which included a DRZ400 with a stock tank. Tha little tank was pissing me off. It seemed like we spent our day working around his tank. That was just for a day. On a multiday his little tank would have had me dreaming of ways to sabotage his bike while he slept so I could ride for a couple of hours without stopping at yet another gas station. Long story short, don't use the word "dumb" in response to someone's question. You either are not thinking enough or you are thinking too much (in the wrong direction) When my family is older and can spare me for a few days or more I want to take some epic adventures on my Tiger. I will HAVE to buy a $700 Safari tank because the range on the Tiger is in adequate for a true adventure. Most of the gas stations in the mountain communities here in Virginia don't have pay at the pump and are closed Sundays. Greater Range= Less Stress. The nest time someone asks a question that seems dumb try asking more questions to better understand the question rather than saying the question is dumb. Really? He was looking for help from you, man. I know you were not actually trying to be rude, but this is not Facebook. And he does not plan to sell the DR when he buys another, larger, bike...

The general consensus is that the arrow map will reduce your mpg by maybe ~20% (someone can correct me if they think my numbers are way off). Several people seem to be succesful in running various aftermarket exhausts (i.e. Leo Vince) with the standard map and that seems to not reduce mpg. I may go this route.

The Arrow pipe is SUPER expensive too. I have a Scorpion that sounds lovely (has a removable baffle for when you want a bit more stealth....nver fitted mine though ) and uses the standard map. I get about 47ish on my daily commute.

All true.

Tiger 800 gas mileage does tend to continue to improve up to 5000 miles or more.

And this bike seems to be more sensitive than most to factors like air temperature, summer/winter gas blend, etc. I can get as low as about 35mpg when commuting in cold weather (winter gas, cold, dense air, 80mph on the highway for 20 miles followed by stop-start in-town riding). And I can get upwards of 50mpg while out for a long, moderately-paced ride on country roads in warm weather. For what it's worth, the latter is much more common than the former -- generally speaking, my Tiger is usually between 45 and 50mpg.

I get shitty mileage, and my rear tire tends to last about half the time as others. Hummmmm, I wonder if the 2 are related?

I always seem to get better MPG in mountains, which I attribute to having to push through fewer air molecules. So, if that's true, then warmer weather (less dense air) means better MPG also.

no, the grade of gas in the winter isn't as good. they have to step up the grade because of the heat and effects on the atmosphere.

that's how someone at the gas station explained it to me once

Winter/Summer, makes no difference to me, I just love twisting the throttle and hearing that beautiful triple sing way too much to worry about fuel consumption

I have about 500 miles on mine and according to the computer in the dash, I'm only grtting 36 mpg with stock pipes, stock tune, and east throttle.

That seems kinda low but I'm sure as it loosens up some, that will get better.

winter gas contains ethanol (or more of it) in many states. Ethanol = bad mpg.

Good day all,
Thanks for all the replies to my question about MPG. I really appreciate it.
Although my enviro footprint, total cost of ownership etc are all important to me, I'm mostly concerned with how far I can go on a tank of fuel. Like Dirtmonkey said earlier, we ride in a lot of out the way places where fuel may not be readily available. I've ridden the Roadie and the XC and they seem like fantastic bikes!

Weeeell, IF I had to stretch the tank, I'm sure the mileage on mine would be above 50 mph. Normal hot rodding gets me over 46, but I live at 5400 feet and mostly ride higher. My normal range is about 230 to 240 miles.

Altitude improves mileage. Winter mixture cuts mileage on all vehicles by about 10%. Ethanol sucks in every way. It is not your engine's or the environments friend; but there isn't a corn farmer in the country that isn't driving a new truck!
