Hey guys - got a new chain for my 620 that I'm just getting back on the road (bought nonrunning). Can anyone tell me proper chain tension? On my 06 450 exc I'm told run it pretty loose, but that's a totally different bike. My 620 is a 1995 "rally" not sure if its an rxc, dakar, etc - vin just comes up "rally". It's got a cush hub and 17" supermoto rims/tires. Anyone know the specs for the chain? Also - is this bike considered an LC4? Thanks!
Hi, I posted the message before yours on this forum. I just bought a 1995 620 RXC and it came with the owners manual. For chain tension it says to push down on the rear of the bike until the rer wheel axle, the swingarm pivot and the centre of the front sprocket line up. In this position you should be able to push the chain up and down 12 to 15 mm without great effort (at the top center of the chain). It also says a rough guide is to be be able to move the chain 2 finger widths at the front of the upper chain slider with the rear of the bike uncompressed. I have really thick fingers so I used the first method. Hope this helps. If you have any advice for me please reply to my post. Thanks.
The first method is how you determine chain tension for EVERY bike, but few people do it. .5" flex at maximum chain (alignment) is correct. The 2-fingers method is usually close, but never as precise.
Take a little time and remove the rear shock out the bottom of your LC4 and cycle the swing arm to find the correct chain tension. I suggest you do this to you 06 450 also.
Thanks for the input - Halfcab, i've done this on my 450 based on input from ktmtalk. Didn't realize this was a good rule of thumb for all bikes.
Yes your 620 is an LC4 - doesn't it have that stamped on the engine case? There is a bit of info on chain adjustment in this thread: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126049 goto Post #48 for specifics There was a big discussion of this, that ended well here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79898&page=5 goto post #71 for the start, and it continues on the next page And here is one dedicated thread on chain adjustment on LC4s: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85356 That should be more than enough reading to keep you from bothering to remove your rear shock just to adjust drive chain tension...
Hi all! Sorry for hikacking the thread, but I have a somewhat problematic situation with the stock jetting on my bike. It is a LC4 620 1995 with a VIN VBKEXD40XSM70703392 and engine number 558303372. All I could find is that it is just like the guy above an ""EXD 620 Rally"" model. Search on the model of the engine via the engine number didn't yield any results. So my question is would somebody be simpathetic enough and end my torture buy giving me the right stock jetting. Bike refuses to start and will only start when towed by a car and not very well, will die easily on me if I do not keep the revs high enough and basicly is unreliable as hell to take it to the woods. The carb is a PHM 40 SD Dellorto. Apreciate all the info and thanks in advance! PS electrical has been measured and checked and changed when needed. New plug, new cable, new used (within the range when tested stator) old orange spark thing (again within the range when it). I am guessing on the carb now because I have checked almost everything else and the previous owner was a self proclaimed tuner so even with the jetting in the bike it was all messed up and did not correspond to any of the OEM setup I found. Could it be that compression might be low and it could be a factor? I have not measured it but I had trouble with the back wheel locking when towed up to even 4th gear on asphalt.
