Lots of the WRR guys doing multi-day trips are really liking those Giantloop bags. :thumb

I really want to do an extended weekend trip in the WNC mountains this winter/spring, might be shopping for something like that...

None really cater to dual sporters, theres no real market around here cause lack of LEGAL places to ride. Most bikes sold at (jap) dealerships in the piedmont are either mx bikes or sportbikes sold to squids who immediately extend the swingarms and dip every visible part of the bike in chrome

The aforementioned BMW DUC Triumph dealer probably caters a bit to the adv crowd just cause that is the nature of Bimmers...

    Thou art HARDCORE Sir!!!
The prospect of rolling in 40`F Class 5 water w/ brain freeze shrinks my manhood and sends my heart into A-fib. I'll bet its a pleasure this time of year though, with the high water level and absence of river pus.

On another note I got another engine back in the ol' KLR and will be watching this thread for some early spring riding. Been a couple years since I rode with y'all. Hoping to ease back into it.

If it was just snow, I'd be all over that. However, there are a few months (and inches) worth of ice under the fresh powder - here's a quote from mikek on Carolina Riders Forum:

    "Guys,
you might want to rethink Maple Sally......
I was up at my mountain land north of Collettsville, off hwy 90, earlier this week. Paved roads going up were fine, but anywhere there are trees there is still snow.
And I don't mean normal snow- the 14" we got in Dec never really melted, it just iced over, and we had 6" of fresh snow on top of the ice.
I came close to sliding the Jeep off the side of my road going up, cuz the BFG mudders could not claw thru the ice UNDER the new snow. Even after I got to the top, I got the 4 wheeler out and it was not particular fun, just TOO much ice under the snow.
All this was before the latest blizzard.
or maybe it makes ya want to go do MS......be careful, I'm OUT
    "

It's a moot point for me anyway - bike is sitting at Rick Tannenbaum's (Cogent Dynamics) near Asheville for suspension work:evil

Adako road got sketchy right away.

Maple Sally started out muddy and then turned to ice.

Deep ruts=stable equilibrium, but solid ice underneath didn't allow forward progress. I could get going out of the track in the crusty snow, but that got too deep before very long.

This was the end of the line for the DRZ and me today. We didn't even make it to the first gated road.

FR 118 was good to go last night although we barely made it out of there.

The abbreviated ride leads to Valentine's cupcakes. :evil

I forgot to add: some kid rode/pushed a bicycle through Maple Sally today. That's impressive.

I really need to stud up a set of tires sometime...

If only to guarantee that we WON'T see any appreciable snow once I do, LOL!:D

I bought and installed some auxiliary heat for the house this winter with the assumption that it would guarantee an easy winter. :lol3

So we were out doing some tree work in the yard in the sun. It seemed nice and warm. Not so much.

Here is your Maple Sally conditions report.

I think you could make it through at this point. I didn't go past the first gated road. It's still pretty sloppy.
