Noob Q, kick stand issue, real or theory

New guy question: Is the kick stand issue on the Adv R more theory than application? It reminds me of the chatter about the neutral switch issue oin the DR650. Yres if the neutral switch bolt (1/4 20) comes loose it can grenade your engine but it is rare. The mod is mostly peace of mind. Is that the case with the sidestand upfit?
Black Dog cycle works ad talks about it being an issue on both a side strike or "the weight of the rider resting on the sidestand". I would be surprised if another static 200+ pounds could crack an engine case, but not shocked if a ballistic hit like a crash could. Whats the real story Team Orange?

I should just tell you to do some research. But the short answer is you may never have an issue, but if you do it's a major expense. A hard hit to the kick stand will break the cases. Your choice.

Just do the relocation. Save yourself $3000 for cases and more $$$ on labor and downtime of a broken moto. If you 50/50 it and don't ride anything with rocks then take your chances. Fwiw, from an engineering stand-point, I would do it regardless. It's cheap insurance man... If it does ever happen you'd be ruing not relocating. I took about 5 hard hits directly to the sidestand spot today. I've relocated though so I didn't even think about it,

First, yes, it's an issue. Cases are VERY expensive. Ducati bikes have the exact same problem, and I've seen those cases crack at the mount point as well.

Very real issue. Lots of pics of broken cases floating around here. I personally have CJ Designs relocate. I like it much better than the BlackDog. Seen pics of the BD cracked floating around here. CJ relocate is rock solid and doesn't require and mods with a grinder

Does the BDCW require grinding or is it bolt on? I am convinced!!!! Don't need to see more than one cracked case. Relocator and additional skid plate will be first! Thanks KTMers

I believe only the early 950s need to have the frame web ground.

You might want to look into the Weld 86 skidplate/relocator combo deal- good price, good quality.

The bdcw is bolt on on all 990s. Only a few years of 950s required grinding (2004 and some 2005)

There is a thread right now, "Broke my side stand relocate plate" it was a BlackDog. Plenty of photos of guys having to grind either the frame or notch the bracket. CJ designs relocate kit is very different from the other options I've seen iMO much better. Craig makes really sick stuff for these big girls

To BDCW's credit, it looks like the ones that broke were modified.
CJ'S kit was designed by someone else and he took over the product. He did add some improvements in 2012 which made it even better. I have a pre 2012 version and super happy.

PABiker had a nice relocate set up. I got it, and it works.

I could be mistaken, but I really do believe grinding is necessary only on the early bikes.

Exactly. I've also had both, and prefer CJ's (PA Biker's old design, now improved).
I do have Weld 86's excellent Skidplate, but liked CJ's relocator best.

I also have a welded up BIG ASS HOLE in my engine case because I did not get the relocator soon enough.
Mine didn't crack,....it broke the bolt flange right the fuck off!! :eek1:eek1

GET the relocator, any relocator

I had a piece of Alu diamond plate welded over the GAPING hole.
It still seeps oil today, but the patch is strong enough and cheaper than a new case. Any thoughts of resale are GONE, however

CJ Designs is the best on the market, hands down period!!! Takes the side stand completely away from the case, no contact what so ever!!! You can mount the bike standing on the left foot peg with the bike fully loaded with no issues. The locator takes 15 minutes to mount up: whether you get the switch extension or the eliminator is up to you. IMO, CJ Designs is the best out there!!!
