When I came to put the center stand back on (after powder coating) I found it was slightly twisted (maybe 5 degrees) and the lugs has spread apart. I purchased a second hand one off of ebay, same problem. The issue with this is the mountings spread away from the special mounting screws on the tranny and the pivots end up dry. Eventually the stand can break. It's a heavy bike without anything other than the single cross tube to hold the stand in shape. So, I applied a lot of heat to the cross tube and twisted it straight again. Then a little bit more heat and pulled the lugs back together. When that was done I welded an additional cross piece close to the pivot to stop the spread and twist. I added it up as high as I could so there would be minimal extra moment for the springs to overcome. Seems to work fine.
Just over 50k. No plans to crack the case. Part of my plan is to keep this bike in synch with the bike I keep in europe (currently in a garage in Athens) which I purchased in the UK. That bike (below) has just passed 20k miles. So tearing down the US bike was great for giving me a good grounding on how everything comes apart and goes together - if and when I need that. I'm an oilhead newbie, just moved over from airheads - figured the 1150GSA's the ideal 'crossover' for me from numerous R100GSPD's I've owned. I'm going to yank off the stock BMW luggage when I go over in a month or so and replace it with a set of Vern's cases - larger and more robust - intend to tour Turkey, Tunisia, Morrocco as well as most of Europe. On this bike I fitted a set of Hyperpro's, metal quick disconnects, a Bagster tank cover, a rear fender (see below), wiring for heated vests and gps I also changed the GSA seat and rear frame to a stock GS version as part of my endless quest to get a seat that's comfortable. So far the stock GS single seat sucks as much as the GSA seat, but at least I have more options now, plus the missus is more comfy. I plan to put a stock muffler back on the bike. The Remus is nothing but a light weight noise generator that looses mid-range.
Hey guys I need your advise, found a 1993 R100GS with 81000 on the ODO,looks clean but no idea about the history,The guy is asking 3500$.Any thoughts?I like the simplicity of the bike and do most of my own work on whatever is in the garage, current ride is a 2001 KLR,I'm trying to break into the world of BMW.
My GS Loaded for touring near Brookings Oregon last weekend. Mostly road ride, but with a GS, you just gotta poke around those unknown roads a little bit also.
Wow! Inspirational. I plan to do a lot of this... Interesting to see the choices you made. How did you paint the cylinders? Kim
I sent payment yesterday actually. CAN'T WAIT! A black 2001 1150GS, it looks like jesse luggage, aeroflow screen, $2800, not sure of the topcase brand. Looks SWEET!! For now it has street tires, BLAH, it's gettin' Avon Gripsters ASAFP! Oh, and a skidplate, as a GS should have. I've wanted this model for at least 2 years, the 1150. SEXY BIKE! I like the simplicity of it, the fact that I can maintain it, is therapuetic for me. i've always been happiest working on stuff, so I'm STOKED!!! Pix to follow upon arrival.
