To be honest I can't remember what kind of rings I used on the 1050 top ends. Not 100% certain, but I think they're domestic V8 parts. I've found that well fitted pistons rings with the appropriate end gap and *three piece oil rings* is all that's required to eliminate oil consumption in a healthy top end. I'll guess the gapless variety may mask oil burning in worn bores?
Gapless = 3 or 4 piece rings No place for the oil to squeak by, and will follow a less than perfect bore better than a stock ring.
Bob's BMW parts order will be arriving tomorrow. Now the fun can start in earnest. (glad I'm not Earnest) fwiw, Lornce
Never work on your bike on an empty stomach. If you're in Hamilton, you meet your freinds at the West Town for the best breakfast in the city. Joe, Steve and Leon enjoy one of Kenny's stories over coffee.
Leon, Kenny, Joe and Steve prepare for a productive day in Bino's garage. Bino's '78 R100/7 has it's motor on the bench awaiting Ken and Leon's attention while Steve gets set to break the GSPD into bite size chunks. I'm still not sure what Joe did all day.
Steve waves a hammer and exhaust nut wrench at the GS/PD while I attempt to capture a pic that represents a flury of productive activity. It didn't quite work out... That's Bino and Ken in the background deciding how best to attack Bino's R100/7 lump. ("lump" is British idiom for motor). Oh yeah, this was an international occasion with Joe, Ken and Leon joining us from NY while Steve came along from Deetroit City.
Just to recap, and so what you're about to see makes sense... The bike's getting an engine overhaul because it drank too much mud during this incident last July: Viewer discretion advised. :eek1
Not sure if it's obvious, but this view of the bottom of the airbox looks like a New Orleans city street after the flood waters receaded. There's about 1/8" of silt left after the water evaporated. :huh
Below the airbox things looked even worse. :eek1 There's even a little evidence of some mouse habitation in there.
Couldn't get my toolbox and the motor into the trunk of my car at the same time. The tear-down will begin in the basement once I get it home. Pictures at 11.
So, today I went out to a mill pond south of Brantford and saw a guy having a little fun with his buddies. This is what multi-time and current Canadian Superbike Champion Jordan Szoke does when he gets a day off in February:
You like that? There's a few more over here.... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6239693#post6239693 Enjoy!
Wow. that bike must have been soaking in mud. sheesh. Great pic of the guy on ice. Lornce I think your content to post count ratio is quite superior. (but don't get a big head or you'll need a new helmet!)
