That is exactly what we (the group I rode with) did. There is a motorcycle friendly campground in Tok (Thompson's Eagle Claw) And then the run from Tok to Dawason is not too long. With the obligitory stop in Chicken
The worst part of the ride to Dawson for me was the 200 odd flat, straight, boring as fuck miles between Fairbanks and Tok each way. Better or worse than the Dalton? I was blessed with good weather when I rode it, but can't help but think of at least a few major roads back home in Baltimore that were in worst condition and certainly less maintained than the Dalton except for how far you are from someone to change your tire for you if you get a flat or take you to the hospital (let alone getting to the hospital) when you have an off. Watch out for the Princess/HollandAmerica tour buses and RV's on the Top of the World highway and you should be fine. Hope I can make it in 2013, especially if I can manage to bring money and have knobby tires on the lil old WR250R this time.
I've ridden straight through from Anchorage to Dawson for the last several years. Hoping to do it differently this year and the loose plan is to overnight at the campground in Tok, or maybe Fast Edward's. Large time either way. You'll have a gas. There are a couple choices for tires that were sort of ushered in with the Buell Ulyses that might make your bike a little more stable on the longer dirt and gravel sections.
It'd be great to hang around the campfire with you at Eagle's Claw in Tok. Since Tom S has been THE MOST INSISTENT that it be called a rally maybe, just maybe, it should be known henceforth as not only the D2D gathering, but also as Tom's Rally. Tom, will we EVER see you in Dawson City again?!? Hope so. Mark H.
Don't you have to go more than twice to have it named for U? and anyone riding there on a Buell doesn't count, so has he ever really been there? You'd think with all his BMW bashing and Rally Crying he'd be an ornery ol' cuss... not some loveable 90 year old ex-hippie in skin tight leathers stradling a HyperRetard...
I dont care what they call it, it has become a rally. Im not alone in this thinking, the others just dont say it. Tom's Rally?! Oh, hell no. Run that one by the organizing committee & see how far that gets. If i go back to Dawson for this I wonder if you would even be able to find me in the crowd.
WTF? Quite a spin ya got there Dap. Ex-hippie? Yeah, here's a pic you may have seen before of my old hippie days in the mid to late 1960s ...
just keeping thread alive with my questions, im sure some other might need it too. anyways ill be reading my milepost on Canada..!!
Yeah, that suggests there are new hippie days. Yah, mon, you think we can't pick you out of the crowd? I don't give a shit what you ride there. It's not a matter of whether it's a rally or not, we just want you to be there because we want to see some style.
The mounties might question that pea shooter and your Uly would probably get better milage than whatever your standing on there, but it would be good to see you in Dawson. The food and company are at least as good as Tastee Freeze :)
Fixed. N/C <STRIKE> Judy's Cafe</STRIKE> Peggy's Cafe Fixed again. ...get your ass to Dawson, hotrod.
A very nice picture of a much younger Tom S. Whats with the BROWN shoes. Oh I forgot ........ Navy. And by the way......You need a hair cut sailor.
