17/ 42 would be a good comb for mostly high speed gravel and hwy stuff... 16/ 42 represents the best compromise for the 640 as with that you can carry a 16 + 17 tooth and change to either without modifying the chain...

Personally I never change the gearing on my 640 and on one bike I run 16/42 and on the other 17/45... Both of these ratios are almost equivalent, the reason for 17/45 is longer chain life and longer chain rub block life... 17/45 puts less bight on the chain so it will run a little smoother while at the same time not rubbing against the slider block as much... In very tight trail riding situations slipping the clutch is my low gear... The clutches on these bike are very strong with my original unit still measuring well within spec after 127K KM of casual use +abuse...

That is another thing I would recommend you carry is a spare chain slider rub block as the original usually lasts about the life of 1 chain... I purchased about three and now I just glue in a new nylon rub strip to each of those blocks as they wear out...

16-42, but grind out the chainguard (or buy the duke version) so the 17t fits before you set out riding.

I have yet to use mine, but they do look capable of doing the job. If only there was a tool to set the beads on tubeless tire I would be all set for road side tire changes.

Two countershaft sprockets for every rear sprocket no matter what size?

This chain and lube combo did a rtw for me. One rear sprocket, two countershaft.

Check out the Ironman sprockets from Dirt Tricks, they are more durable than normal steel ones yet almost as light as the aluminum ones. Best of both worlds!

yes they do ... I have one on my bike.. perhaps they dont make a black version .. the sxc that I started with had the 2.15 but I prefer the wider rim for sandy tracks

what i should have said is they don't make the STX or LTX in an 18 x 2.50 which was the first choice, so i went with the dirt star...but well spotted - can't get anything by the ADV guys

My stock cush OEM lc4 wheel came with a DID DIRTSTAR 18x2.50 in silver

so as I say maybe they discotinued or simply dont make it in black

like i said i wanted the stx or ltx and its doesn't come in the 18x2.50 so i went with the dirt start 18x2.15...we're talking about different rims

all I said was that YES THEY DO MAKE AN 18 in 2.50 wheel..

i was going with a oil cooler behind the radiators but ended up just buying a used adventure frame. I will be taking all the extra parts I have gotten together and a motor and build the sxc frame back up and will probably go with this brand.. http://www.jagg.com/offroad.html

but if you decide to not get one I belive with a fresh con rod kit and oil changes every 1200-1500 miles or each week you could go at least 30,000 miles... thats how long mine lasted before it went

has you or anyone else seen this brand HT racing they make coolers for 400/450/525 and 530models...just wondering if they are still in business and has anyone converted one to fit the LC4

They are still in business but im sure that would take an adapter plate made to fit the holes and if you are putting an 18ltr or similar it may not fit..


not much room for things near the cylinder on a lc4 based bike...thats why they run the cooler up front on the rallye bikes..

you could also try an xr 400 head tube mounted cooler too but I think the jagg is the way to go.. BTW will you be adding a fan ?
