My 02' adventure is enjoying its new home, and I'm starting to get down to the small stuff (i.e. done the bearing upgrade, valve adj. etc.). I'm liking how a past owner went to the FCR carb, though the 'SXC competion' exhaust is problematic... It's not USFS stamped and I need that sort of thing in my neck of the woods. Is there any way to modify it to Smokey's liking? I've found some replacement USFS inserts for the end of exhausts on some websites, but they cover only the full dirt models (stopping short of the 625's). White brothers has an interesting new product, but again, doesn't look like it's for my bike. If I'm to buy another exhaust, what would people recommend (less than $300) - I'm thinking just a KTM that's similar but USFS, if that's out there. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
i have used the leo vince X3 slip on on two bikes with good results it comes with spark arrestor USFS approved and inserts for 94/98 db.. the US leo vince site list it for $261,- fit and finish is very good, atleast it was on the two yamahas i had
What's with people putting illegal pipes on these things anyway? I bought mine with a full Akra system, complete with a muffler that I can see the depths of with a flashlight. It's loud. It sounds good rumbling along, but any time I open it up, crikey! they need ear plugs in the next county... I'm trying to find out if there's something I can do short of buying the street legal muffler, which I may end up doing, to quiet this thing down a bit and bring it into NFS specs. They test at the only event I'm considering... Anyone out there know if I can get my hands on an Akra end cap that comes with a spark arrestor? I think it's an evolution muffler. Their web site shows an insert of some sort for the street legal version, but no dealer has been able to help me find anything out. Oh, and email to Akrapovic apparently go straight to Slovenia limbo- I've never heard back.
Here is a Pro Moto Billet spark arrester on a SXC can. This is mounted on an '02 640 ADV R. Seem quite enough, but I do use earplug if I am riding all day.
It looks like this one, and the part number agrees with this thread. And I thought the SXC pipe was spark arrested. Dammit.
So I was wondering how hard it would be to make a spark arrester. The wire cloth is easy enough to find, and a sheet of it with the right hole size is pretty cheap. Problem is, a little more searching turned up a bunch of idiots trying to make them out of dryer lint traps and trailer door screens. Guess homemade won't go over well with the rangers, even if you do it right.
Thanks for the encouraging info about the pro moto piece. I thought it'd fit, and it's nice to see a photo of it working, and Luke's reference to the old string about it. Order will go out this week.
Let us know how it goes. I have the SXC hardparts can on my bike and was wondering how that PMB sparky would work on it. I'm really curious as to the sound level since the SXC can is so quiet in stock form.
My stock '04 SXC muffler is definately USFS approved, says so right on the side of the can. It's not so quiet though, well not nearly as quiet as the stock supertrapp on my 96 RXC.
Yes, the stock can on the Ktm 625 SXC is spark arrested. The SXC Competion can from the KTM hardparts catalog is not. They are different cans.
Hi all, Super old thread, I know, but I'm in the same boat. I need to find a spark arrestor tip for this exhaust, but it doesn't look like Pro Moto Billet has them in stock anymore. It's an SXC Competition exhaust on a 2000 LC4 Enduro. Anyone got one to sell / know where I can find one? Thanks, Steve
I talked to PMB a couple of months back and he still had a couple end caps for the SXC sitting on a shelf.... Give them a call and inquire, tell them it takes the old style end caps ... They shipped me the end cap, quiet core and the spark arrestor and said there was a few more left if I knew of anyone interested...
Personally, I found the PMB setup as they sold it a bit too loud. The great thing about running a KTM competition muffler is the lack of noise. The PMB endo as they sold it is significantly louder than the stock end cap. I ordered the smaller diameter tail piece and the small quiet insert for mine. The large tail piece just had too much bark even with a quiet insert. The smaller diameter did not affect power. I believe it is still less restrictive than stock.
I just got off the phone with Pro Moto Billet, and apparently within the last two weeks they took all of these remaining end caps to the recycler. They are no more! Fxxk! I scoured the web, called the few retailers that still had them listed for sale [JC Motors / Ron Ayers] - only to find that they were out of stock, just hadn't updated their sites. Anyone got any other possible leads for me? The PMB seems to be the only sparky option for this pipe, and I really don't want to replace the whole pipe. I just bought it and based my jetting around it. I'd totally hack it up and fit my own screen, I just don't want to risk the fine / impound from the forest service. Thanks! Steve
I will double check my spares box tonight. But I am 99% certain that my extra PMB stuff got sold on eBay a couple of years ago. All I can suggest is posting a WTB in the flea market and keeping an automatic search going in eBay. I can tell you that I will be picking up an extra quiet insert while I still can. I already lost one on the trail.
