Yesterday. Foggy and cold and rainy day from Austin to Big Bend. All stock, 96 R1100GS, Ural tub, 260,000 miles still going strong... and yes, I did also have my heated gear on and a heated blanket for Spirit. Have two more on the crash bar facing rear for the... tailgaters!!! They learn very quickly... Be well, Ara and Spirit
love that setup 1. great picture 2. glad to hear about the "TAILGATER PUNISHMENT" 3. how many total watts are you lights? could you really run ALL THOSE LIGHTS and the HEATED GEAR, TOO?
With all the lights and heated gear I am still under 700W. I will run all 7 off road at night. Odyssey Battery has been good to me always. I am on my 4th one recently I think... Here is the rear... (nice when getting into the campsite also to get my bearings while late at night / Love night riding!) Be well... Ara and Spirit *** looking for that Hippo Hands thread BTW if you know the link! Life saver they are... same with the Buddy Grips...
Are those something you can run on the road with traffic, or is it a situation like when you would use your high beams?
They're not turned on in this pic, but these $19.00 per pair 65w halogen trailer lights from the discount auto store have worked well. And, I found out I can even get replacement lens for $3 on-line. With the wire, switch, and relay, I think I spent $35.00, and I think they suit the rig pretty well!
i appreciate your reply and the info do you have some voltage monitor to "watch" you charging system while underway?
YEP... those KRISTAS are amazing they look terrific on your rig thanks for the picture now, one day you'll have to change to HIDs for the low and high beam to keep everything around a 5,000 K color temperature well done
No need really... It has worked for the past 260,000 miles, since 96... I do monitor the forever increasing gadgets though!!!... Cell Phone, I-Pod, SAT Phone, SPOT, 2 GPS, Laptop, Netbook, flashlights, 3 cameras and their batteries... most however is powered by a 27W solar panel, inverter and two Sherpa120, all by GoalZero!!! A bit too much if you ask me... I am so Happy that Spirit does not require batteries!!! I gave up the Valentine... we just don't go fast enough... Be well... Ara and Spirit
I was just gonna switch the high and low beams to PIAA H7 bulbs and call it quits. Is that gonna mess up the lighting with the Kristas?
I have the aux headlamps on the GSA, Kristas on the GS (solo bike). Thinking the Kristas would be too big on the front end of the Hannigan, but the smaller Glendas would be just about right.
nah..... it'll be fine i just like the "look" of HIDs with the kristas better but, that is purely a preference thing, of course
Cool. I wasn't looking forward to researching light wavelengths and what goes with what. Appreciate the help.
Boondox: I know you added a front bumper to your hack - what did you do about mounting lights to it? Thanks Duncan
Just bumped into your question. I use also a Garmin GPS 3 [the old old model no one wants] that shows the voltage. That's enough for me. Stay well... Ara and Spirit
Clearwater, if you're looking for a great option for a voltage meter, check out the signal dynamics one. It tells you everything you need to know with the minimum of fuss and space taking up. http://signaldynamics.com/index.php...age.tpl&product_id=56&category_id=44&vmcchk=1 You can see it below the switches in this pic: Very small and versatile. The picture is taken approximately 4 minutes before I plugged the hole with a small rubber duck. I tell everybody the voltmeter is my "Duck Status Light." I recommend doing so on any bike.
Thought I'd go ahead and stick a picture on mine in here. Nothing fancy....two hellas on sidecar, one fog light between sidecar and bike and two driving lights on front forks. It lights things up pretty good actually.
I put a set of Glendas on the bumper. Good for conspicuity but they really aren't designed to throw much light downrange. Adam from RocketMoto (a phenomenal vendor!) worked with me when I ordered Kristas to replace the OEM GSA fogs. He delivered a set with a harness that controlled the intensity of both sets (Kristas on the bike and Glendas on the hack) from a single dimmer, flash to full power on high, and also when I sound the horn. Couldn't be happier! Here's a pic so you can see the Glendas.
