Anyone take their F650GS offroad?

Who has taken their F650GS off road? How was it? pictures appreciated

All the time. One time unexpectedly.




Mostly just dirt roads up until now because of the slick tires. I just put knobbies on, and I'm ready for some old logging roads but that will be the extent of it. This bike is too expensive to repair, and too fragile.

I took it for a ride too

mildly. It went well. I'll explore the options more when I apply the knobbelies. I want to wait until I wear through this set first.

A thread like this makes as much sense to me as someone asking something like, "Anyone Taken a KX250 or RM250 off road?"

A F650GS is NOT a motocross bike ! :huh

It is the "more street" version of the F800GS; therefore the OP's question.

It's still a Dual Sport....

If you were never going to take it off road, why not just get the F800ST?

Hey Nev,

What sort of tires does she have on her bike? It's tough to tell, but they look rather on the slick side. If they're the stock battle wings, how'd they do in the slicker spots? I'd like to ride more dirt but have the stocks on now and don't want to throw them away or go through the hassle of a tire change before they're dead.

Oh, dual sport -- like the KX250 and RM250 you mentioned in your original complaint.

I would bet that a large percentage of the F650's will spend 90% of the time on pavement, just like most of the other GS's. It's a street bike with long-travel suspension. A KLR will outrun this bike on anything rough.

HBN can kick my ass off-road with his TW200 while I'm on the DL1000, but that has never made me want to stop, nor has it made it any less fun.

You misinterpreted my response. The original question was "Who has taken their F650GS offroad? How was it?" I was responding to the question by making a comparison between the BMW and the KLR since many riders are already familiar with the KLR and how it handles offroad.

I enjoy my F650 twin for dirt roads but nothing technical. I believe that any one who would consider buying an F650GS twin already has some idea of what it was designed for and what it's general limits are for the average rider.

I consider the 650 twin a lighter, smaller, and better looking alternative to the Wee-Strom.

I bet that a helluva lot of F800's spend their time sitting all farkled up in a Starbuck's parking lot with some clever little Ewan and Charlie stickers on them.

The F650 is capable off road and a lot more capable than some people imagine.

Here are a pair at about 14,000ft. Let's see some pics of an F800 at that elevation on that terrain, past a tree line.















Dirt roads, high elevations, no pansy 9-11 or park rangers telling you what you can or cannot do, it's Mexico and all in a day's riding. The F650 is capable enough.

Your only limits will likely be your tires, your ass on the stock seat, your frame of mind, and maybe the amount of oxygen. LOL!

I take my 650GS thumper off road from time to time. Knobbies, a tooth down in front and two up in back help a lot.
