Mongolia

Hi everybody,

I have done a couple of tours in Europe. My eyes hat set for do a tour to Mongolia. I am going to do this trip in 2 or 3 years but I am already preparing my self for the trip

As fare as I have understood it, Mongolia does not have so many roads and there comes the first question and problem. I have a street bike. Do guys still think it is possible to go with a street bike? I have seen a youtube link there a couple of guys goes with izh bikes or mz and they are street bikes.

Is there any part of Mongolia is better suited if you plan to go with a street bike?

Second of all how much money do you guys have as budget for a month stay in Mongolia?

Street bike in Mongolia?? That sounds pretty crazy... I spent 3 months in Mongolia and outside of UB, there were very few paved roads and a ton of water crossings.

As for price, I think I spent less than $450 on a three week tour in a van. It's extremely cheap, and I was paying something like $2 or $3/night to stay in a Ger. Camping is free everywhere. This was about 6 years ago though, so I'm sure some things have changed.

If you're there for a month, I'd really suggest just renting a bike.

Did I see your post on Horizons? If so, I misunderstood your "street bike". I was thinking something along the lines of a Honda CBR or some racer. If you're just talking of a small bike (a non dual sport or off road bike) you'll probably be fine. Practically all the nomads I saw were riding 150cc Chinese bikes and doing plenty of river crossings, bumping alone two up and (often) pretty drunk! I'm looking into buying one myself, as I'll be traveling through there this June most likely.

Yep, locals are on small standards & get around fine.

So it is possible to drive their with a small street bike. Is tent a must in Mongolia or is possible to find some place to overnight? As a preparation, I am going to do some overnight in tent to see how it is. If I can skip tent, I would prefer that.

Sound's like that it is really cheap to live there. I am not giving up on Mongolia. I might just fly to Mongolia through Turkey and buy a chinese bike and ride there. Somehow I am going to try to find a suitable solution for my trip. Well I have 2-3 years to find a proper solution.

I am planning a trip to Mongolia for the end of July/beginning of August. I plan on renting/buying a bike when I get there. I am leaning toward renting, as I have heard that registering a bike can be a pain.

Traveling in Asia is vastly different than traveling in Europe or North/South America. The costs are WAY different.

As far as time frames and bike choice, it's been talked about. Basically, you will never have enough time or money, so just get out and do it and make the best of it. It is an adventure after all. You may have to do a chapter ride to finish the whole thing, but so what...

The best bike to take on a trip is the one you are riding now. Make sure it is in good running order and you know it front to back. Make sure you know what parts fail and need to be maintained and have access to them, whether as spares or available to drop ship from home. Be comfortable changing tires and patching tubes.
