I read and searched all around and couldn't find anywhere if anyone has had the problem of a wobble at about 30-40 mph. It's as if the wheel is egg shaped. Really bad if in 3rd gear and cruising to the light, rpms are at about 3k to 3.5k? Any suggestions? I have Tourances on that were balanced at stealership. I thought they were maybe balanced wrong but isn't the wobble supposed to get worse as speed goes up?
Start easy, take the bike into a shop and see if the rim is bent or if the wheel is not properly balanced.
What tyres are you running? I recently swapped to a TKC80 front and it behaves like Tom Cruise on Oprah's couch at certain speeds. Something to do with resonant frequencies.
I agree... most likely resonant frequencies. Just because they were balanced at your dealer doesn't mean they did it correctly... A couple years back a crappy motorcycle shop here in Dallas let me out the door with 10 psi in my tires and about 2 pounds of weights on the wheel... they didn't remove the old weights. Anyways, I had problems at 40mph (almost exactly) on my last set of tires that were severely shark-finned.. The knobbies had word hard on the leading edge of the front tire and caused an earth shaking resonance at 40 mph, was fine at 30 and 50. I changed rubber shortly after and the tires and rims were fine...
I am running the Tourances and they are new, it's weird, if I run out 2nd gear to 5k its not as bad. Just seems strange to have to sport bike the gears to avoid the wobble. I will have a different shop check the balance job and maybe check the head bearings. Thanks guys. On a side note, it did the same with the TKC's at about 35 mph so I thought more road tires would fix this.
Mine is doing the same thing between 35 - 45 mph (09 F650 Twin). My preload is increased front and rear. Front tire is worn 50% (Tourance), and I hear a noise that I suspect might be some slack in the steering head. Anyone of those could be the culprit. I checked already, and the rim is not bent. I'm going to adjust one thing at a time and see where the problem is.
Problem with the front Tourances once they get a little worn. Best to run a Tourance Rear for long wear and an Anakee Front for no wobbles.
TKC front same... 35 mph could make some folks sick I bet... Had mine rebalanced twice by different folks all same result...
I'm not sure what we are talking about here. Wobble, shimey, slapper... Are all slang, used fairly specifically by professionals but with every meaning under the sun by motorcyclist. So..... Are the bars going back and fourth, or up and down? Does this happen while firmly gripping the bars, or with your hands in the air? Does power make it better or worse? Same question with brakes, and which brake has what effect? Are your wheels true and round? Is your head bearing loose, or your rear fork loose? Stiff links in chain, chain loose? Give me a clue and I'll try to help but I need a few mour nouns and adjitives :)
OK I will try my best, non mechanic here.. The front end is going up and down as if I am riding the whoops. It starts at about 30 mph and goes till about 40, its more pronounced if I am cruising to the light(coming down in speed) and the bike hits 3000 rpm's or if I change gears a little early and really don't run it out more and shift at 4 or 5k. My grip can be light or off completely and same thing happens. The power seems to help a bit by means of running it more like a sport-bike, high rpms. Just had a different dealership take a look and wheels are round, no head bearing issues they said. Define rear fork loose? Chain links are all good also. Thanks for any help and hope this helped.
I was told early on to back off the preload. It reduced the wobble on the front of the bike. Made a big difference. I also put a set of Roz risers ( up and forward) and made my seated position handle much better.
