Hey All - It's been a while since I've been in here, good to be back My XR is still kicking strong and is in use almost daily. It's been 300 hours since I put in piston rings and lapped the valves, and the bike hasn't missed a beat since. It starts and runs flawlessly, and the valves haven't needed a single adjustment! Anyway... I have a variety of issues, but 2 are important. 1. The rear brake pivot point has developed play, which makes the brake harder to actuate. The frame and pin both have some wear and I'm not sure if there's anything I can do about it. Maybe cut off the tab, fab a new one and weld it on? Maybe there's a modern style rear brake pedal with a a bearing that can be retrofit? Have any of you remedied this? 2. The clutch pull is too hard, it's harder than it used to be. I would love to lighten the clutch and also lengthen the effective motion at the lever. Do the clutch actuator rods get worn and start creating friction? I'm not sure where the friction is in the system, it's probably in the arm that goes down through the side cover. (It's not the cable). Has anyone mated up a hydraulic clutch to your XR? It seems like it would be pretty simple to do with one of the Magura kits.
Does anyone have a spare stator lying around? I need one or two to experiment with. They will be cut down and rewound so an old faulty stator is fine. Preferably near Melbourne Australia.
Mine is an '88 too. I bought it about a month ago. Not sure about the size of the tank. I think 6 gallons? It came with two others. Both smaller. One is OEM. It has the 18" rear, but he gave me a gold 17" too with a brand new tire mounted. I haven't had the time to ride it much yet. Hopefully soon.

KTA, you could weld a short extension on the actuating lever (at the gear box) to make it longer, seen this mod before how ever was on a YZ426...did make it lighter. Currently looking for a head for a big fin project, any one got one not being used? with OR without valves ect, '92 model...... Steve? Frame question: Having trouble finding a welder willing to work on my frame (PO broke off the kickstand). Thinking about buying a frame, since used they seem to run around $200. Anyone know offhand, what year frames are compatible with a 1996 XR600R? Also, it's got Oregon plates. Is the plate tied to the frame or the engine or both? Is there anything else I might ought to be aware of before I go and swap out my broke frame for an unbroke one? ===@===
I know of two guys down here with frames for sale but only one has a plate. 1991 and up are all the same.
Pretty sure in Oreegone the plate is tied to Vin on frame... Heck, look on Craigslist for a small buzz box fer cheap...scrounge up some scrap steel....run a couple practice passes and then goober it on yerself...
