I didn't have my camera ready yesterday to take pics of a sweet Stella overlander at Marrakech airport. I got this near Ouarzazate in 2008. Are you around in Morocco these days Wibo??? I'm here about every second week.
Hi Dom... I head back there overland at the end of Feb for the school winter holidays here....it's cheaper to drive there than to pay for 2 weeks skiing!!!...I go there with two other French families.... Last week I was there with www.redtread.com scouting out Dakar pistes for new ride outs...
Cool! I've been part-timing in Marrakech since July 09, and it seems I'll be continuing to come at least through this spring. I always fly straight in from Barcelona, but I have access to dirt bikes here Marrakech, though not much time to ride lately... If you want (former ) Dakar pistes, check out the google map link in the first page of the RR in my sigline. There's some awesome open desert stuff from Merzouga-Zagora-M'hamid-Lake Iriki (dry lakebed) to Foum Zguid. PM me if you're in the Marrakech area. I know all the places to get beer!
the C303's were, afaik, all powered by a B30 inline 6 gas engine that was used in a number of 6 cyl volvo passenger cars in the early 70s, its a very rugged and reliable engine, and tuneup parts are readily available. This is -not- the same as the B28 volvo/renault V6 used in later 80s volvos that had camshaft lube problems. they also will go 65 on the highway, something no mog will do. I've seen several C303 camper conversions, looked way more practical than a Mog.
They are being built in Gaggenau, since 2002 in Woerth, Germany. I just lived in Freidrichshafen and this guy with his Unicat U4000 was from that area, too.
65mph? That's the Top speed of a U3000-U5000 (with 365/80R20 tires. The biggest avail. tires for those are 405/70R20) C303 are nice little Trucks. sized between a Defender 110 and the older small Unimog 404. More practical? I don't think so... but you can go through tight spots easier, that's true. Also, the C303's payload is not very high...
the usual small mogs that you see as civilian conversion toys have a top speed of like 45 flat out, I thought? true re payload, the c303 is like max 2500 lbs payload, but that should be sufficient for a 2 person camper thats not too over-equipped, and still have enough left over for a bike trailer, no?
Are you talking about the old ones? The new U300/400 and U3000/4000/5000 series all have a top speed between 55 and 65 mph. Or better - the have a limiter that does not allow more...
Here's another nice truck for camper conversion <OBJECT width=425 height=344> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CnErOM9r4lI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></OBJECT></P> http://www.olive-drab.com/idphoto/id_photos_man_8x8.php
Not exactly Unimogs, but they're similar and I have always wanted one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiOlymvt46s
The first two are Russian Kamaz which is used by the Russian Military. If you're referring to the HMMWV then they're not in the same weight class. The US equivalent to a Unimog is the FMTV (Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles). These are 2.5T-5T vehicles. (The HMMWV is 1.25T.) Oshkosh Defense makes the FMTV. Too bad they are only available to the DOD and it's Allies.
except, Steyr-Puch's heavy truck division is now owned by.... General Dynamics. so who's licensing whom? btw, Steyr-Puch is also well known for... the Pinzgauer. indeed, the Steyr 12M18 that morphed into the FMTV could be considered the Pinz's big brother.
Partially right. GD bought Steyr's Special vehicle division. They're not involved in trucks. http://www.steyr-ssf.com/ Steyr was taken over by Magna (Magna Steyr) Steyr Engines Division was bought out from the Management and is now Steyr Motors. The FMTV is largely produced in the US. Concept and initial production by Stewart & Stevenson in Houston. S&S were acquired by the Armor Holding in 06. The Armor Holding has been bought by British Aerospace / BAE Systems in 07.
hmmm. looking at the FMTV things, none of them have drop axles, they all got conventional live axle differentials. wrong class vehicles entirely for this thread
