Did you clean or replace the oil lines/tube and flush the frame?

I changed mine the first two times after about 50 miles.

    Hi Guys,

Newish owner here long time lurker. Got sick of my XR400 so grabbed a 650.

What a beast. When its running at-least.

Bike got yellowed with the Staintune exhaust so I swapped back to the Honda muffler with competition baffle. Now it looks stock but the sound isn't.

Problem is it just wont start and run easily.

I've had the carb off and had that ultrasonically cleaned, 175 main 68s pilot 2.5 turns on the idle air and I think B53 needle.

List to do until I'm really stumped.

Fix float valve which seems to leak in some positions and check out that ACV valve. I hope it wasn't damaged in the cleaner.

Also I seem to be hitting a second TDC at the bottom of my kick which didn't happen when I bought it.

I fucked up the valve clearances 1st time round on seans bike on the weekend Crobbo. He's got a stage 2 hotcam in there and it threw me a bit at first just finding TDC the way I always have, just used to working on stock stuff. It feels alot different & was good to learn.

So I'd pay particular attention to finding TDC, ie valve covers off so you can be sure they're not rocking, ie wrong stroke, and someone to look in the timing hole to be sure while you're rolling the kickstart through compression.

Make sure needle is B53E & clip in middle slot. Check the throttle slide. Any sign of wear will usually result in poor idle type problems.

Make sure cables have free play.

Take alot of care to set the float valve to 18mm and you should be right.

I have the stage 2 hotcam as well, did my valves a few weeks ago.
Couldn't see shit through the inspection hole, and too much rooting around taking the bash plate off to get the stator cover off.
I went with the plug out option with a straw in the hole to find TDC and that worked fine for me.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah I agree Q, forget taking the cover off. TDC through the plug hole is easily accurate enough. the main thing I reckon is to be looking at the valve movement at the same time. It caught me out, but I am no guru.

shit not a guru .......that's the last time I ask you to sort my bike out ..like ya did on the weekend and got it ticking like a clock :thumb:gdog

if ya ever do take the stator cover off ..get some white paint pen or liquid paper and mark your T ....then you can see the mark easy through the sight hole ...the 2 lil marks in the hole is where the T lines up with

but I also use the zip tie down the plug hole .....

Yeah might give that a go.
I could see the marks on the magneto, but not the little tag on the engine case to line up. Maybe a better torch might have helped?:dunno
    Ah well, you get that.

if you look just at the end of the thread there are 2 raised marks opposite each other :D

im not an expert so I use that and the ziptie ....the guru typs can do it of the kicker by feel :evil

there 50 different ways and each to there own as long as it works for you the float level is something I need to learn ..but mind you I heard there was 2 pumper carbs land today ...so if im lucky it might be a thing of the past

drop..... kick kick kick kick kick fuuuuckk
