I really liked the trackmasters on my DRZ, but burned through them so quickly with a bit of pavement and a lot of rocks. I'm running a much less aggressive tire now, and just suffering a lot in the washes and the skate-y singletrack. It's some kind of shinko dual purpose tire that looks like the one in 150Ron's picture a few posts back http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20468205&postcount=17547. Seems to hold up pretty well, and is darn cheap, so more likely to get replaced when worn. Have a good ride, and bundle up! Psycho
I went riding today at Oliphant Lake, on Vancouver Island! It was 30 degrees, and this is the warmest place in Canada! I've run heated grips for at least 10 years now, but have alway found that my thumb still gets cold......... until I bought a pair of these: (about $20 on ebay) They're easy to get on and off, they don't restrict access to controls, are tougher than they look, and they take up bugger all space when not on the bike as they lay out flat.
I wanted to join you today, but I am going down to U of A to see how my $$$ is being spent. I figure with two kids in college = a new F800GS every three months. Hmmmm, when they finally get out, I will be able to have a pretty nice stable of bikes and adventure. Ride Safe and make sure you dial up the Scotts dampener in the sand washes. Let's start planning the Grand Canyon ride soon...... Theoretically with a 112-link chain you'll have more even chain/sprocket wear with 47/15 than with 44/14 since the same tooth doesn't hit the chain in the same spot as frequently. Reference here: Regarding the VaporTech -- I've NEVER had an issue with moisture from rain / splashing water. That said, I've never drowned the bike.
I saw ur pix Psycho, u definitely need more agressive tires like Maxxis Deset I/T or Dunlop Geomax, i have the trakMaster II on another rim seperatly, so i only use it for this type of ride & ur right u must keep these tires as far away from black top even though it's a DOT tire:huh. That's the only major downfall of TraKmaster 760. Another way to try to save the rubber (of any knobby tire) is to inflate it to 33psi or so when on pavement & lower them to 15/12psi on dirt.
I have a little one too so i understand when it comes to college i am willing to sell both bikes if i have to. But Suzuki seems to be cheap & reliable in every way that even an average guy with 4 kids can still affort it ... Everyone stood me up today I guess i can't blam them due to this freezing temperature. So i rode few miles down in BuckHorn wash rd and came back early, it was really cold. It's all ready to go i just have to recon one small section (around April/may). End of June is da big weekend. Ur bike looks great P. so keep it in top running shape till June ...
$10 Aldi special. Waterproof. If you can get the ipod to sit still, the touch screen still works. Don't know about direct sunlight as the only time I used them was on a late night run to Mildura, then it was pissing down rain the next day.
Bummer on the turn-out, maybe next time. At least we know it will warm some day. Man, this global warming really gets kinda cold sometimes...............
Thanks for the compliment. I was really trying to get a fairly high performance trail bike put together at a reasonable cost. I had a DRZ400E before and knew the pros and cons of the bike. Also, a fairly new orange bike = too much green out of the wallet. Getting the "S" model was not my first choice, but the deal I got on it was quite good - completely stock 2006 DRZ400S w/ 254 miles on it for $2600! I hope to ride in your neck of the woods (cactus?) some day. Your comment about riding in sand and dampeners, agreed. I rode an XR650L without a dampener from Mexico to Canada in many a wash. Skill set first, aids second, stand up, lean back, and throttle it up baby................. Take Care
Hey guys. Finally picking up a DRZ400E this weekend for $1100. Not sure about how much it's been ridden but at that price it's hard to pass it up. It's electric start, not street legal in MO but I have seen converted E models here. I'm 39 and have never ridden before, I think this will be a good starter bike for me as I'm fairly light at 5'11 150 pounds. What a wealth of knowledge I've found here! But I'm still a neophyte! Can't wait to have something to tinker with again. I was into 4x4's pretty heavily but haven't done anything active hobby wise for like 7 years. I'm getting anxiety and depression back it's time to get back out there and have fun!
Yea bigger sprockets is better, i get what your saying. but i got the 14/44 set with the bike. Got them on this weekend, and went for a test drive on some dirt/gravel roads. Must say its a lot better! did not drive to much, becouse i have to safety it first Comming from a 2008 rmz 250 the drz is a lot slower, but its a fun bike! Afther i get it inspected i probely do the 3x3 mod, and hope it picks up a bit better. Nobody has dirt comming in the airbox afther the 3x3 mod? becouse the original has a little rubber sticking out so the water/ dirt doesn't get in.
The water that gets in, will just drain out the bottom. With the larger opening, it is less likely to pull crap in due to the slower air velocity going through a 9 square inch hole, versus a 3.5 square inch hole... dirt will go in, but thats what the NoToil filter is for! I would get a Holesaw, that is about 3.5" in diameter, then use an edge molding like they put on helmets, to finish it off. 3.14 x1.69x1.69 = 9 same as 3.3, but alot neater... Unfortunately, I figured this out after I did the 3 x3 and jetting, but mine works really well. Better than I thought it would.
I'm looking for a frunt wheel for the DRZ forks I am putting on my KLR .From what I understand an RM wheel will bolt up,anyone know what year would work?
Messed around with the bike today, put on a beer can wrap around the shock reservoir And installed a TTO Tachometer, nice piece for sure, pretty good for $30 bucks.
