Time to replace the radiator cap on my 950 and was wondering if anyone could tell me if you need a specific KTM radiator cap or will a small 3PSI radiator cap from the auto parts store work as well . Just want to be sure. Thanks for the help.
I looked for an after market replacment for my rad cap with no luck. The factory pressure on the rad cap is 1.2 bar which I believe is aournd 18-19 psi, much higher than most. Just bite the bullit and get the factory cap.
I use the cap off the smaller dirt bikes, they make one with the same pressure rating as the 950/990 and it's half the price. 1.4 bar or 20.3psi
On the advice of others, I'm replacing my 1.4 and just ordered a 1.8 cap from BikeBandit...plus you get an AMA discount...
I wouldn't recommend a higher pressure cap. It's harder on your wp seal, which is already a suspect area for the LC 8. It's really not necessary anyway, if your cooling system is operating correctly.
So does any one run the 1.8 cap? My bike is dumping water after about five minutes in town. Would the wisdom of theweb say this is a properly operating cooling system? And I bled the eff out of it before this bullshit. Stock cap bad or a cooling system that only works at twenty plus mph. I have the higher cap in front of me. The goal isn't to have a parking lot bike just not one that purges itself and effs. Me
Higher Pressure = higher temp before boil over The stock cap on the dirt bikes is now 1.8 bar, some accessory caps go to 3.0 bar. Don't think the higher pressure would significantly effect the water pump seal.
Be sure of the reach. The caps I have seen in places other than KTM shops, are the right diameter, and pressure rating, but have a shorter distance between the cap and pressure the seal. They will not seat, and would effectively leave you with a 0 psi cap.
Hi Guys, Some help please. A seriously dumb question maybe, but how do I add picture attachments of my KTM 1190 R to my reply's on this thread? Thx, Louis
