A good freind of ours was in the planning and filming of the route with Touratech on the Colorado BDR. It's a super route, doubly so if one was to combine it with the Utah BDR to make a mega adventure trip. :evil
We enjoyed Touratechs Washington BDR & Oregon BDR last Sept. Very cool. Colorado though, even better.

argh, Anyone else have a bastard of a time with trying to get a vtwin cold started. My SuperHawk hates the cold, and I can jump it to life off a battery box, but I am always afraid of having the same problem later and needing a rescue to get home. Interwebs says that the cold cranking amps for the battery is low. It is a new battery, but any helpful hints on better batteries that will not leave me Fuct?

The new tech (Lithium-Ion) batteries like Shorai usually have significantly more cranking power, but in our area of the country you need to go through a 1-2 minute procedure to get the bike started when its below 40 on the first start of the day.

    The procedure is roughly:

Turn the ignition and any accessories on for about 30 seconds. Hit the starter-- you'll think the battery is dead. Leave the ignition and all accessories to keep the current flowing and try again after 30 seconds. If it doesn't start, turn the ignition off for about 30 seconds, then repeat the process. The cool thing is that the battery gets stronger as you do this. Last winter I went out in 20 degrees to see if it would start. Took me 4 cycles to get it running. Again, only an issue for the day's first start. Rest of the day is normal starting.

I've had a Shorai in the SE for 18 months without issue. The benefits are increased cranking power for longer time, light weight (easier to pick the SE up all day :lol3) and smaller, no need to put it on a battery tender.

On the SE, the cost difference between the OEM Yuasa and the Shorai (which was 4ah stronger) was about $10. Otoh, the stock batter lasted 6 years-- don't know what the Shorai will be.

Thanks for the genuinely good info Barlow, and wise asses.... its good to be back, being greeted by the likes of you is worth its own reward ;)
Jumped the bugger up earlier to go for a blast. But will be down for a bit, as I am switching to the stock gas tank, can never really dial out all of the niggles with the new tank. basic work, but as I am doing it, I will also be knocking up some wee brackets for the lower fairing I got for it.
See you all on the road soon!

    Just don't shut it off.

Welcome Back!! Hope you Kids had a GREAT time:freaky

    Seriously.......Battery Tender is your friend:deal
If bike is going to be sitting for more than a week in an unheated garage.............plug it in.
    I have 2 that I alternate between 3 bikes.

The only bike I haven't used the tender on is the Hyper with the same Battery Walter has, a Shorai Li-Ion
Not quite fully sold on the "pre-heat" method, nor do I have the patience sometimes.
I've had it for over a little over a year, knock on wood it hasn't failed. Bike has turned over slow but always starts:clap:clap
    The weight difference is incredible:eek1

As far as restarting after jumping...........I've used a jumper box to get off to work (left GPS plugged in for 5+ days) & bike has restarted @ end of day.
    Your's should do the same.
    If not something is wrong.
    Battery
    Cables
    Weak Starter
    Charging System
    Engine Tune

The battery recommended by Honda should be fine. I'm sure they've tested it. Hell it's Japanese:lol3
Be careful of some of the cheap batteries as they are not as powerful.
Some even use different rating systems:huh
Would only go with a Yuasa or try a Shorai

Good Luck & See you out there:ricky
