As far as I know, Rotella no longer has ZDDP in it. A lot of diesels now have cats, and I've never seen it 20W50. Valvoline VR1 has ZDDP but you have to buy the actual race oil for non street vehicles. Which is hard to find in auto parts stores as they can't have people putting it in their cars and fowling the cats. Who reads the labels but us any way? I've done a lot of looking around as I live in the boonies, 80 miles away from any BMW shop. Best thing is to buy motorcycle oil. Besides; an airhead holds what? 3 quarts?

Nah I'm running 20/60 Diesel - Penrite 100% dino plenty of zinc cheap ( compared with MC oil) available at auto store. You probably have something similar available for older diesel engines. Most of our lubricating oils are from imported stock as the local stuff gets the aromatics split off then turned into jet fuel and light crude.

I don't see Valvoline 20W-50 for 4 stroke motorcycles in that list. It's labeled as "meets or exceed JASO MA API SF/SG/SJ..." Does this mean it has enough zinc?

That oil is designed for engines with the trans sharing the oil. Either the V-Twin specific or VR-1 Valvoline in 20/50 is a better choice for the Airheads, and yes they have a high percentage of ZDDP.

    Your imagination.

What if any assembly lube did you use ?

Did you bed the cam in ?

This stuff seems to do the trick.

I'm using Valvoline XLD Classic 20-50 in my R65 - SG rated. I'll be doing a UOA on it when I change it soon to see if it's what it's cracked up to be.
