Tiger Tales - Dialling in the 800XC for the dirt

Blacktiger - I am caught in the "Bark Buster back order" group. I went with that particular brand because they will work with a Kaoko throttle control. (Kaoko is GREAT to work with!) So Question: 1) Do you think 1050 hand guards would work with a Kaoko? 2) do you have a pic of handguards you can post (or send email via smartphone) so I can see how they mount? Oh crickey! I have no idea about the Kaoko thingy so I can't comment about that. All I can say is that the 1050 hand guards, once you bought the whole kit, are pretty much a direct bolt on replacement for the OE XC guards.

So you've got brackets that use the pivot bolt on the levers. Then they bolt into the end of the bars. It really is that simple.
I don't really have any photos of when I put them onto the standard XC bars other than from the front.


This is from when I'd just finished installing the Renthal bars. I had unique spacers made to suit the handle bar ends.


This one is when I had the Renthals and the 1050 guards on my Scrambler. You can just see that there's two bolts onto the inner bracket which is, I believe, what give the whole assembly better stability. It's what the XC guards are lacking. You can also see that the guards are about 5mm thick. The molded in rib around the middle also adds strength.



That's the best I can do at present.

Another set of good guards to consider are the Maier ATV Pro guards. They are especially nice if you've got large hands. I've got them on my KLR, and will be taking my OEM TEX guards off this spring as soon as I find a pair of Maiers for it. I would highly suggest staying away from any guards that are all plastic because they won't stand up to much of a hit...

I just bought some new M6 bolts to use the stock threads. No problems with my Kaoko throttle lock.

BlackTiger - ( BigJohn & Robdirt too) Thanks for feed back, options & pics! I'm not certain twisted Throttle will get my order to me before departure (March 20) to Utah - gonna be close. (Hard to believe it takes 2 mos for a set of hand guards? Not like I ordered an AR 15 - Anyway...) So considering other alternatives. It appears the the 1050 guards are much more robust than the OEM 800's - and a buddy has a set available for 'loan', from when he changed guards on his Roadie. I will install around 15th, if BarkBusters don't arrive first. It appears at least from first glance, the 1050 guards would also be compatible with Kaoko. Got about 1200 mi ea way to Moab - and certainly want the throttle control on there. (figure I'll have enough wrist damage on "tigger naps" in Utah) Thanks Gentlemen!, Cheers, j

How are the mirrors on the tiger? They are a bit small on my husky and I'm thinking I need better on the tiger.

I use the stock mirrors. I ride mostly street with the T8 & I like good visibility.

Hey guys, I had a couple of questions regarding riding in dirt. I have dropped Scarlet (orange T800XC) twice in the dirt and both the times it was because of stalling. I understand that for the most part it is a lack of experience from my part than a problem with the bike. But I want to learn to mitigate the situation by making the bike as ready as possible for dirt. I have noticed that since I have gone out on dirt, when I stop the bike after a 20-30mins ride (on or off road) and switch off the ignition, I hear a draining kind of sound similar to the one the fuel pump makes on start up. Is this related to stepper motor/air filter? What are the basic periodic maintenance to be done on the bike while taking it off road often? With what periodicity should I clean the chain? Air filter? Do I need to grease the stepper motor?

Any and all suggestions will be highly appreciate. Pardon my ignorance.

Sounds like a 15t sprocket is a good start. I haven't put mine on yet, but it should drop the speed from 8mph to 6mph.
