I've searched and found a ton of different responses, none cut and dry.

I won a Garmin 60Cx and it only mentioned "bundled maps" as extras in the listing, so I'm just assuming I'm getting the GPS and not much else.

In order to be using this thing ASAP, what else do I need to get started?

Any links you can provide would be super helpful!

Do they come preloaded with basic US maps? If I can get decent maps of VA and WV I'll be happy, I'm just a COMPLETE noob and don't even know where to start.

    Cheers!

Garmin gives very little away. At best, you'll get an extremely basic "base map," unless the seller has bundled wither the Garmin DVDs or SD cards.

Don't worry, though. Particularly for your area, there are excellent free "open source" maps available from a variety of sources. These are updated more frequently than the Garmin maps, and are generally of good quality. Here's a place to start:

    http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/

You'll have to educate yourself on how to use and install them, but you'd have to do that anyway. Garmin's tech support isn't exactly crystal-clear.

    Two thumbs up for www.gpsfiledepot.com

I was able to follow the tutorials and load maps from the site onto my Garmin 60cx with ease. I've downloaded the entire west coast topo maps on a 16G micro SD card and all is well. Basecamp is free, and you should have that as well.

    Cheers,

Open Street Maps are very good also. They have a variety of sites worldwide. Strangely, the Dutch one is one of my favorites. Google translate is your friend. Fortunately, this page is in English:

Just be forewarned that Garmin manuals are, to be kind, very basic. They come nowhere near really telling users how to get full use of their GPSs. Lots of button pushing and exploring, and above all patience. :D

Go to my web site DualSportWest.com and click on GPS then follow the instructions to set up your 60. Doing this now will save a lot of time later and get you familiar with the pages and functions.

    Will do tonite, thank you!

Package arrived today and it's literally only the GPS unit.

Bummer, get what you pay for I guess. It does boot up and work just fine though so I'm stoked to start using it after I get it loaded.

    Man, your site is incredible!

Thanks so much for this resource, I'd have searched for hours just to find what you've got on the setup page alone.

Many thanks! You ever come to VA I owe you a cold one.
