Newest addition to the G/S- Sump and center stand guards. I tried to get the OEM BMW center stand guard, but they were NLA, so The other option was the Twin Headlight Earnie one, which looks better and mounts better than the OEM, but the Earnies' sump guard was not a design I liked, the rigid attachment to the sump was unacceptable. I decided against it after seeing Hardware Girl's on the ST. I purchased the sump guard, bolts, rubber spacers and washers from Chicago BMW and as luck would have it there were none in the USA, but there was ONE left in Germany. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT ONE.....ONE ...ONE, WHICH MEANS THAT THERE WILL BE NO MORE OEM ONES EVER!!!! BTW, no pictures here as I was in a hurry, but my front brake was a little soft so, since I had the caliper and master cylinder kits on hand, I rebuilt them a cople of days ago. Lots better pressure at the lever. Pretty easy to do, just needed snap ring pliers to get the piston out of the MC, then for the calipers, compressed air to push out the pistons, (keep your fingers clear), a small pick to snag the piston seals. then just clean the parts well. The mastercylinde and calipers bores were in good shape so the master cylinder bore was lightly sanded and cleaned again, then seals and bores lubed with brake fluid upon assembly.
It's the wrong sump. That skid plate matches the smooth-bottom sump, not the early GS and /5 sump. The smooth sump is slightly deeper: http://www.largiader.com/tech/oilpan/
The Guard is #71-60-2-315-345, pictured on the R80G/S fiche. It also looks to fit the same as what Tom has on his G/S http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=453959&page=92
My mistake - I thought it was the GS plate, not the G/S plate. But if you run across a smooth-bottom sump (and matching pickup assembly) it might give you a bit more clearance. I'll measure the critical dimensions at some point. Take care of it, you might have a collector's item!
Are you saying G/S and GS skid plates are different? I always thought it was the same plate. I picked up a used one and it seems to fit fine. I was told it came off a GS by salvage dealer.
I thought they were the same as well. Looking at the fiche shows different part numbers. The G/S is now showing NLA. The GS is still purchasable. I thought the engine blocks were exactly the same? Is it that the GS has the crossover tube and therefore the PD skid plate is different? Tom

MAX shows a pic of the GS plate. Narrower in the back, no cutout for the drain plug (makes sense as the smooth sump has a rear-facing drain). Most likely the difference originated with the different centerstand on the GS. Don't know if it's shaped differently around the exhaust or anything. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to retrofit the GS system to the G/S. System being plate, sump and pickup. EDIT: actually I don't think it is narrower.
I have both a 81 G/S and a 93 GSPD in the garage. I can measure both and see what the differences are this weekend. Visually they look exactly the same. Tom
I have been doing some jetting changes on the G/S, the bike was jetted with 135MJ/ 45 Idle jet needle position unknown, millage was OK, 42-44 on back roads under 75mph, but starting from cold was bad, as bike wanted to die when giving throttle until warmed up for about a minute. here's a list of jets and MPG figures for the bike. Note- I am not heavy on the throttle, and ride fairly sedate. Sometimes spirited but not extremely hard on it. I'll run some more gas though it to get some average mpg figures. Then try the 145's, I would expect the mileage to drop though.
Main 145 Needle 2.64 position 4 Needle jet #46-241 Idle jet 45 Idle air jet dia 1 claimed 47.0 mpg @ 60mph (with a pointy headed anorexic midget rider) This was the spec for a non US G/S with no polution control. I think you must be getting pretty close. I never could work out what they meant by position 4 as my needles only had 3 rings.
I use the european specs for the 800 engines after the emission plumbing is gone. Breathes better, runs cooler, heads last longer and decent mpg if you keep it under 70mph
does that mean your using the 145 MJ as specd buy rucksta??? Should have mentioned that the air injection has been removed. No other mods. Fresh top end and new rings.
There was a SIB to implement that here, also. AFAICT, every bike runs better with the asymmetric intakes and most of them have probably been converted. It can make a dramatic difference on the R80!
