I'm with your here, Chopperman! The best time I had at the Redmond Rally was riding behind you as we terrorized the camp ground on the ride through!.
I just recently acquired a high miler R100S project. Its a complete bike, and should be a good runner, once I get the brakes sorted out. The PO, unfortunatly has passed on due to an untimely demise in a freak accident on a borrowed Harley. I bought his trusty old Beemer from his daughter to keep it from the scrap yard. Now what to do with it. Its a '78, with over 200K on the clock, but has lots of new parts. The PO bought it new, rode it like he stoled it, but did keep it up. For now, I'm thinking a decent but cheap paint job, and find a S fairing ( it had had a Luftmeister fairing, till a deer took it out, but has high "American bars" on it.) Return it to close to stock, or possibly a cafe strip down racer bike. Who knows, I gotta bond with it over the winter and see what it says to me. Its not that I needed another bike (just ask my wife :^)

This one's for mutineer. Anyway, this is where my adventure riding started, with a 76 XT500 I picked up for $250 in August of 02. Me and this old bike got to be very good friends, and we went everywhere together. It opened up my eyes to how the other half lived (I was a squidboy until then) and showed me the other 95% of the world.

This is very shortly after I got it, I was out and about in the oilfields. Such a cool bike.


This was right after I dumped it on the side of a hill. You really can't tell except for the rumpled license plate. It was at this time I decided adventure bikes were cool. My KTM wears that exact plate today.


So I decided I wanted a bigger tank, and it was orange and no way to paint it, so I painted the rest of the bike to match, and got some new plastic fenders.

My XT will forever be referred to as 'Old Skool'


Lessons learned: #1. Don't sell classic bikes. Oh well. #2. On classic bikes, stock is trick! Leave em alone!

Anyway, this grand old lady was my introduction to a larger world, and I'm a better person because of her.

And I forgot to add my favorite picture I've ever taken. This hangs on the wall in my living room. You can actually see the curvature of the earth in this pic.

My god! Who would want to live in such a desolate place? :eek1

Man, that picture is the answer to every "why ride" question anyone was ever asked.

There are a ton of xt's on the road in the philippines, I almost go crazy there riding down the road in a taxi with xt's buzzing past.

I have a 1983 RZ350, a 1986 RZ350, and a 1972 BSA Lightning
kicking around the garage. Someday I'll figure out how to post pics.
The RZ's are getting new paint this winter, the red is starting to fade.

My newly restored 1974 R90S came til life for the first time since 1986 when it was parked in a leaky shed. During the restoration I pulled down every bit of the bike, doing all the work myself including the painting of the Silver Smoke.
This picture was taken on the virgin trip to Croatia this summer when I did 6000 kilometres in 4 weeks.

Couldn't resist. Have to see at least 2 cylinders when riding. Got it in pieces, restored for 2 years. God bless BMW's sparepart prices.

How about an oddball ? My current ride, 1980 CX500C. Had to replace the water pump seal, rear suspension, new gas tank is in the works, replaced all the cables and hoses. Removed the surface rust off the coolant pipe, painted the exhaust collector box... Runs like a champ ; little loud though, so Im looking for a set of stock exhaust pipes or something close to, any offers



Oh, I recently got my hands on a '72 CB500 four. Needs some work, pic to follow

Not at the moment. PO stuck shortpipes on the bike so I will be looking for stock exhaust or something very close to it. Some other things that need to be changed/fixed, at a glance : hoses, cables, rear suspension, carbs rebuilt, plenty of surface rust to take off...and, there's something wrong with the odometer...it only has around 8k on it

Well, what's an old school ride without some mechanical oddities. It's just fun to piece it together again and that's probably the reason, why we love them so much: there's much more acquaintance involved.
Just make sure you find one of these stock exhaust pipes, they look real nice and unique.
