any more feedback from the guys that's recently switched to the 2012? is there no 690E in 2012? I just spent a bit of time to dig around for the diffs, and it seems there's confusion, maybe you can help to clear that up... <table border="1"> <tbody><tr><td> </td><td>2011E</td><td>2011R</td><td>2012R</td><td> </td></tr> <tr><td>Susp.Travel Fr/Rear</td><td>250/250</td><td>250/250</td><td>250/250</td><td>(unchanged)</td></tr> <tr><td>Seat Height</td><td>910</td><td>930</td><td>935</td><td>actually higher?</td></tr> <tr><td>Ground Clear.</td><td>300</td><td>300</td><td>280</td><td>20mm less</td></tr> </tbody></table> So you are losing 20mm in ground clearance, none in suspension travel, and actually seated higher? sources: http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/ktm_690_enduro_2011.php http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/ktm_690_enduro_r_2011.php http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/ktm_690_enduro_r_2012.php http://www.ktm.com
So I'm in the same boat as the OP. It's been a full year since the 2012s came out, anyone have any comparisons of the two? Thoughts on the whole used vs new 2012/13?
There appears to be no changes to the 2013. I'm guessing in spring when bikes get put to market, you may be able to save $1200-1500 on a '12 vs. 13 and may have a few aftermarket goodies. Probably the best scenario if you are able to find '12 old stock w/warranty and then you know how it was broken in.
I have had a number of KTM's. In my experience, KTM steadily refines their products every year in some way. As an example, my 2004 950 was basically an unfinished product compared to the 2006 950. The latest 990 is sweeter than the 2007. The latest LC8's are the best ever. My 2012 690R has 3600 miles on it. It has none of the fueling issues complained about in the big thread. It doesn't stall. It's smooth. It's powerful like a twin. Of course, I left my motor and exhaust system totally stock to insure I don't have those tuning defects. Regarding discounted leftover 2012's, I think it would be hard to find one. KTM has greatly improved matching their production levels to demand. I put my deposit down in February. I did not get a bike until May, which was part of the second wave of shipments. I was quite worried I might not get one until it was too late in the season to enjoy it.
Looking at some used 690s. Is it worth going out of the way to get the 2012 for the extra HP? I will be taking it on the highway quite a bit. Also, I don't want to sacrifice on the suspension. Is the 2012 suspension better than the 2011 even though its shorter? Can a 2012 be raised? Ryan
For what it is worth, my stock 2012 walks away from both of my riding buddies who ride 2009's with exhaust, ECU mapping and airbox mods. I even went to a 42 tooth rear sprocket and my 2012 still seems to have a small advantage at all rpms.
Lurking on this thread, I trying to decide on a 500 EXC or 690. Looking to do some high speed desert riding. Found a modded out 2009 690 and also a reg 2012 690. After reading here seems like the 2012 is the better deal. Right?
