Just moved to Alexandria VA from Italy and I am looking to get some miles on my Buell Ulysses away from traffic lights. I used to ride my Africa Twin (that I had to sell :( ) in Italy and I am looking forward to explore the area. I am wide to suggestions on resources and or other riders wanting to show a new biker around. I lurked around the forum trying to get my bearings but it's a little bit overwhelming.

...yeah, not sure why I didn't realize this at first...

you probably want to look here first

This is the sub-forum for your area. Lots of good info there. This thread will probably get moved there eventually anyway.

Looking for this type of stuff?

    http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/orv.asp

There's also the non-sanctioned trails all over the place that you'll have to find yourself. Careful though, everything (land) belongs to someone here in the states.

I would show you around some if I wasn't moving to NC right when I got home. Let me know what you find! I haven't been to any of these ORV trail systems, but I hear the one in Northwestern MD is quite good.

There aren't really any trails close in, but MND has put together a map of dirt/gravel roads in NOVA that has some decent stuff in it without going too far.

If you want actual trails though, you'll have to head out west to south western VA and WV. Others here know more about that than I do, so I'll let them chime in.

Nah, seriously, check out the Northern Virginia Trail Rider's website--those guys probably know all the trails.

Hey Leo! Good to see another one of the .Net / ADV crossovers here. :) I know several of us frequent both sites. (I've only been lurking here, waiting for the weather to improve.) Unfortunately it seems like we NoVA folks have to do some traveling to get off the beaten path. But hey, that's gotta beat trying to ride through Georgetown, right?

Welcome. As everyone said there isn't much for trails around here and to be honest you'd have to be a superhero to take a ulysses on the sorts of trails we do have. The only one I know of off hand that is suitable for a ulysses is the Peter's Mill Fire Road near Eddinburg VA. Its about 2hrs ride from DC and is 7 miles long. There are many more trails there ("taskers gap"), but they are probably a bit rough for a ulysses.

If you ever get time head out to Colorado - miles and amazing mountain trails and dirt roads.
