Hey all... I'm on to another part of my winter maintenance on the 990 ADV. I'm about to remove my shock and have it serviced and notice there is a slight bit of play at the upper mount. If I push down on the rear so the wheel touches the ground then let off and push down again you can feel the top of the shock move a bit. This is where the bolt goes through it. (bolt is tight) I would like to find out if some play there is OK or if I need to replace the bearings. I can't seem to find bearings except at dealer. Anyone know of a kit for this?

Thanks again for any help. Very much appreciated !!!

I looked at that part in the schematic but was thinking I had to do all of those shock parts.

    Thank you...

A bit of play is pretty normal, more so on bikes with linkage. I usually ck by lifting the bike on a stand (or center stand) so the rear wheel is hanging off the ground. Then grap the top of the rim and lift.

I wouldn't worry too much until it gets to be significant movement. Perhaps have a shop ck the play

There is no shop around here that I would trust more than you inmates !!! :huh I would be better off standing in front of Wallmart with a sign...

I'm going to have Slavens rebuild it soon and replace the upper and lower bushings at that time.

    Thanks again !!!

Since there is a bushing there I say as soon as you have a little bit of play it will quickly increase. Im guessing there has been something wrong with the initial assembly.

+1 on changing everything on the top end, specially because you are going through trouble of removing the shock.

I had slop in mine in the same spot. I have replaced every bushing and even the bolt and the slop is still there. I just figured it was supposed to be there and accepted it for now.

Let me know if you solve it!

Hey EZ300 how much play do you have going on?

Mine is just enough to be able to tell that it moves but it is not much. You can feel it more that see it but you can see it though.

Here's a little vid of the slop.

I'm going to rebuild it again because I think it's unacceptable.

Your video shows more movement than I have. You can't really see the movement on mine as much as feel it.

All the bikes I have owned have had a bit of play that can be felt lifting on the wheel when unloaded. I currently own 4 KTMs. I don't think there much to worry about. When the lower heim gets squeaky then it's time to change. It's a pretty easy job

I guess I have maybe 1/32 to 1/16" of slop at the upper joint. This is going to be closer to 1/2" at the rear wheel.

No other bike I have ever owned has had any play in the suspension. It shouldnt have any. It's unacceptable to me and I plan to rebuild it again or have it done by a shop so if it's still bad they can fix it the third time.

    Have you got this sorted?

Mine is acting the same way (not visible, but audible and feelable), and tomorrow I'm planning on swapping my suspension with my friends "S" suspension, and don't want to give it away like this. Anybody who has done this knows if it's easy to swap the bearing/bushings, or do I need a press, etc?

    Thanks

No tricks,... it's easy. Small punch and hammer to get the bushings out.
Then I used a socket as a driver to drive the bearing out.

Then just use the scoket to drive the new bearing back in. I then used a "C" clamp to press in the bushings into place.

(Those little retaining clips sure can be difficult to take out though.)
