My grandfather was an engineer. For my 12th birthday, my dad drove me 2.5 hours to the coast where his dad's train yard was. I had no idea what was going on...

Until we got out and my grandpa stuck his engineer hat on me and invited me up into the drivers seat.

I drove that train about 2 miles down the track and backed it back into it's home.

What a fanfukinstastic birthday present! :wings

I've loved em ever since. :thumb

My grandfather worked for Milawakee Railroad for 50 years. It was everything to him. He had a toy train set in his basement that had rivers, lakes, bridges, mountains and went through the entire basement. He built the entire thing by hand.

Could it instead have been the fact that steam locomotives converted approx. 5% of their fuel energy to motive force and even early diesels converted approx. 30%?

Steam powered marine shipping faced the same economics. Some modern marine diesels convert almost 50%.

Hiesler geared locomotive. The ultimate V-twin.

Bert already identified the Climax in one of the previous pictures.

Used to be a big railfan. Still kind of am.
