How do 1190 wheels become tubeless? I see they dont use arrangement of spoke nipples like BMW or Aprilia. Do they use special sealing nipples like Alpina wheels? Or is it just the rubber gasket inside the rim that seals it? I wonder if 990 wheels can become tubeless using 1190 R parts? I know a different (tubeless) front rim is needed anyway but can i just put a rubber gasket on the rear and make it tubeless. I think KTM uses just rubber gaskets to make 690 SM wheels tubeless.
Its not the BMW (BEHR) system of external nipples, its a sealing band. The 990 Adv uses a 4,25X18 rear rim, the 690 SMC and 1190 Adv use 5,0X17" rims - although they are not the same rim and not the same tubeless sealing band. The 5" rim has a wide flat part around the nipple area, the 4.25" rim does not.
I was thinking the same too.. Do the 21/18 wheelset from the 1190R fit on our 990? By juz looking it seems the hub will fit... Anyone can confirm on that? Its great to have a tubeless set on the 990 if the 1190R wheelset is direct fit...
In any case the front rim of the 990 should be changed for a rim that has a bead. I guess hubs are identical but i cannot confirm that. The question is if the 990 rear 4,25'' rim can be sealed using only, the 4,5'' rubber gasket of the 1190R and the air valve stem. KTM makes rubber gaskets for 3,5'' x 17'' (front 690 SMC), 3'' x 19'' (front 1190Adv), 5'' x 17'' (rear 690 SMC), 4,5'' X 18'' (rear 1190 Adv R), 5'' x 17'' (rear 690 SMC and 1190 Adv). Can someone, with 1190 check the spoke nipples if they have some rubber sealing? Alpina uses such nipples without the rim rubber gasket.
Why not to use sealant and duct tape? I used this in my old Honda Africa Twin and worked OK for 5 years.
I've been researching this subject lately and found this cut-away of the KTM tubeless rim design. Note the added recessed channel for the sealing band. If I had to guess I'd say that the new 1190 rims will work on the older bikes, but you'll need the rim, seal and valve stem...
You guess wrong. It's a glorified elastic band. Not sure I'd trust it with a few winters of good old British road salt corrosion under the wheels. Much better systems out there, this one at best is a cheepo bodge.
Ah, that's quite good news! Is your front hub the same as the 950's? I have an 1190 rim and a 950 hub ready to use. Can you let me know the details of the spokes you've had made? It would help greatly, as there is no one in my country who can make spokes to suit, so I would need to send the hub and rim abroad to have spokes made specially if I can't give a spec for the spokes. Thanks, Rupert
You'll need to send your hub and rim to them and they'll build spokes and lace them up for you before shipping the assembled wheel back to you. .
Do you think they would supply the spokes only, as I would like to build the wheel myself? Thanks, Rupert
You guys want to change your tubed 990s to tubeless and there's a bunch of 1190 guys ditching their wheels for tubed. I guess us KTM guys are never happy.
