I recently crashed my beautiful 950 and will be buying 2012 990 with ABS. I think I can salvage the wheels from the 950 for a quick on road/off road swap with knobbies. Does anyone know if I just need to install the ABS pickup ring that bolts on to the rotors [front and rear] to do this swap or in some machining required? I will soon have parts for sale from this '05.5 machine and can't seem to find anywhere on this site where I can advertise this stuff - is it just ebay?
The rear wheel spacer, disc side needs swapping for the 990 item. If the wheels are for off road use you dont need ABS, so use the 950 discs :)
Easy swap. You need to get or keep the disks from an ABS bike. The left front disk, bolts and tone ring are different than the right front disk and bolts. The rear disk is different also. The hubs and rims are the same except for minor color or other cosmetic changes.
RE: What parts are still good off the crashed 950 ? Sorry to be so long getting back but I'm just figuring out how to post images. I am waiting for the insurance appraiser to visit before I can start taking the bike apart - should happen in the next week or so. Meantime here is a shot 3 days into our trip ..more [ And this is the aftermath in the Black Rock Desert and this..
Yup..5 Canadians having a nice vacation riding in the Black Rock Desert and 2 of us decided to have an impromptu get-together. Estimated speed 50-60 mph we met in a v-formation and I high-sided and flew and bounced 75-100 feet before having a short nap on the ground. Other rider slid about the same distance and had a siesta before coming concious again. Me [950] fractured C5, C6, and C7 vertebrae, broken hand, partially collapsed lung, deep abrasions on shoulders, etc. Other guy [570 Husaberg] collapsed lung, abrasions on left buttocks. We both have concussions. Pics 10 minutes before: ..and 1 hour later after help arrived from Winnemucca: The tire tracks in the sand are the ^ shape in middle of the picture> I lost all memory of the incident before and after so can't remember what happened for about an hour. We are both on the mend and I just today have bought a replacement - 2012 Adventure white an will start to dial it in for next year
Glad to hear the chaos was followed by you guys eventually being ok. An hour is a hell of a long time to wait on EMS.. I've worked on ambulances before and have some idea of how long that must feel while not being able to breathe. Was that just a long-sleeve jersey? Any compression suit? I'm curious about the shoulder abrasions and whether they would have happened with a textile (or other) jacket.
I've hauled bike and rider out of the black rock near Trona. I was very lucky to find someone at the Sand Mound to haul him. We were the only people anywhere in the area. Interesting that in that area (the dry lake is about 70 x 25 miles) you would hit another bike. Reminds me of the airplane stuck in the only tree in sight. Stuff happens.
Great idea and I've just looked and can see that will work fine. Is that rear wheel spacer on the right side of the axle actually thicker or is it just shaped differently on the ABS model - sort of conical shape vs flat shape on 950? Regarding my shirt!! Yes it was just a textile shirt with elbow pads and a good Camelback back pack - fortunately I had an almost full Geigerrig bladder so about 2 litres of water and air!!! to act as a spine protector. This was the first day I had removed my Cayenne Pro to ride like this as it was about 100 degrees and I paid for it with the shoulder abrasions. We don't get a lot of days that warm in the Great White North so I usually ride with the jacket on around here. While travelling, a full protector takes up too much space - otherwise I'm usually ATTGATT. This was a very freak accident that happened very quickly -I've ridden for 48 yrs and the other fellow over 40 yrs with lots of experience - simply "things happen". Thanks for the help with the wheel question and will post on the FM when I have been given the OK to scavenge the bike
Change the spacer over when changing the wheels. I use 950 discs on my 990 off road wheels . On the front I got the disc machined in order to take the abs ring flush. The back ring only requires bolting on. I ordered a full set of 990 disc bolts from Ktm .
Just a thought, if you disable the ABS when riding off road then just use the stock 950 wheels for your off road set, that way you wont have to worry about the ABS since there will be no tone ring on the wheels. I used to be able to disable the ABS with a washer, finally just got a second set of wheels without the tone ring etc. Then ended up removing the abs completely.
