Wouldn't enabling that VIN security feature mean you couldn't run it in your car or while sitting in a camp site?
So for give the presumably obvious question here. Can the Navigator IV be used as a stand alone GPS? What is meant by the your statement I quoted? Thanks
You turn off the security feature if you're using it on another bike or car.. Zumo has a sign in PIN security feature that you could enable.. the VIN security handshake eliminates you having to input a PIN. I never bothered with that feature. yes, I use it as a stand alone GPS in the car and on another bike, but if I didn't need it to be integrated with the bike's GPS prep / switch gear, I wouldn't have bought one.
Thanks. I currently have a well used and still quite serviceable Garmin 376c. But I will be getting a new Water Head in the future and am seriously thinking of getting the Navigator with it for all the reasons you mentioned. I also was seeing it as a solution to take the new GPS with me when I travel for my job when I fly out of town and use rental cars. It is so much more compact than the 376c and would be easier to transport in a brief case. What is the 'extra money' required though? That is the part I am confused with. Is it just a bean bag or suction cup mount and 12v cig plug that would be needed? Or is it something more significant.
I have a IV and would rather have a Zumo with stelite radio than the cradle and have to upload music. I use a Scala and it's either the GPS or the IPhone streaming from Pandora. It can make it very boring -to me at least- to ride for hrs with limited music choices. I see the point of zooming in and out etc funny thing is that I have yet to use it. I guess I err on the safe side and if I need to punch anything I pull over. The Zumo with the Touratech mount would have saved me at least $400.
Nav IV is based on the Zumo 660. Zumo 665 adds satellite radio option, but the thought of paying $10 or $12 a month for satellite radio didn't appeal to me. I was given a year's free subscription with the K1600, but did not renew. I can buy a couple of micro SD memory cards, load them with thousands of songs and then stream in stereo bluetooth to my Sena headset. Just a caveat: if you're ordering the new LC GS, and you're paying for GPS prep, the Zumo's will power up but won't be controlled by the switch gear. Just saving you a rant later. It's a simple firmware difference but Garmin and BMW will not provide it to make the Zumo compatible.
Never had any music on my bikes... All tough I think that some traffic information would be a nice welcome on the bike as well.
The Montana (or a derivative of it) will not be the new Nav V. Even if you could get the BMW firmware, it would not load on an ordinary Zumo. The firmware checks the units electronic serial number before installing. Zumo and Nav V use completely different number ranges.
Hi all, FYI, XM radio is offering a 6 month subscription for $25 w/no activation fee. I got this offer 1 week after the free 3 mo subscription expired on our new Volt. The catch is that after 6 mo, the subscription renews at their usual rate, $15/mo. BUT, if you pay by check from an invoice they send you, you can cancel the day before the 6 mo. runs out. You just have to stipulate that the billing is by invoice. I would not let them charge my cc. as they are terrible to deal with for cancelling a subscription that's got a cc. attached to it. At least according to the Volt owners' forum and that reflects my experience of trying to get a refund for a pre-paid subscription that I cancelled when Sirius merged with XM a few years back. This offer is also good for new subscriptions too so I've just bought a used XM30 antenna for my Zumo and will get 6 months for it for another $25. That will take me nearly through the end of the riding season, in mid-Sept. I'll cancel that one too and wait for this deal to come around for it the following spring. XM is worth $4/mo but not much more, at least to me.
This. believe what you will, but sure looks like a Montana and says BMW Motorrad Navigator. On the bottom there is says "Adventure"
I am not a believer; I'll stick with facts. Is does say "Adventure" and not "Nav V" Let's just say everyone is a little correct and a little incorrect.
All the previous BMW navigators have had 10% more functionality than the Garmins they are based upon, for 100% more cost. I doubt this one will be any different.
I work for Garmin and have been beta testing the Nav V for the past month. I can guarantee you it isn't based on the Montana.
