I run a K&N and Staintune exhaust and I haven't done anything with the FI. f650.com says the brain will adjust itself according to the bikes breathing (if you keep the air sensor in the intake and the lambda I guess). Top Tip A BMW mechanic once told me that if you mainly have short trips the bike will never run correctly because it doesn't have time to adjust the FI according to air temp and humidity. He said that it takes about 30-40kms for this to self adjust. Certainly something to think about after that rainy cold evening ride home and all week you ride in warm, dry, sunny conditions, but never more than 20kms to and from work - the bike will still think it's wet and cold (and in worst case, dark
You need a Fuel Nanny or TFI box. You also need to unplug the oxygen sensor. This will reduce your MPG by about 30-40% and you don't really gain much other than better throttle response. You may also need to mod your snorkel. Tuning it with a dyno and adding an aftermarket silencer might get you 1 or 2 extra HP. Spendy mods for a very small gain, but it cures surging/stalling at the same time (so does an iridium tipped plug...that's around $10).
I don't believe it'll add enough fuel to make a performance difference. It'll correct for elevation, but won't just add fuel because you reduced back pressure or let more into the airbox. I always got consistent fuel economy using the factory or aftermarket exhaust...saying that the computer isn't adding fuel. As the K&N goes...I ain't touchin' that one
My thoughts imbedded in your quote below ... remember, this is from a guy who has never ridden an F650, so who knows what theory will produce the desired result till you actually try it? Though I lurk in the F650GS/Dakar threads, I'm actually riding a Thruxtonized Bonneville right now. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=252051&page=49 Being an '04, it has the 790cc with a standard 17 tooth on front. At 70 mph, I'm always wanting a 6th gear. The newer models have the more potent 865cc with an 18 on front. 865 guys often go to a 19, but all the forums I've read say that if I go as far as 19 on my 790, I won't have the low end grunt I need from a stop that the increased power and torque of the 865 compensates for. I haven't tried the changeover yet, but I plan to experiment and see what feels right to ME. Until then, it's all just theory. You should do the same ... after all, it's only time and money!
Just my .02 here. I switched to 16-49 sprockets and love it a bit more on the bottom and you really dont feel that much of a change up top. accleration is better too. I think the 16-49 should have been the stock gearing on this bike.
Nice bike Roundigo ! I've run 15/47 for a few years, but changed it back to stock midway through the trip around Oz because of all the hours on straight roads in 5th. I like the idea of just cahnging the rear sprocket, but what about chain lenght ? will it fit both a 49 and a 41 sprocket ? That's at least 12cm difference (8 links at 1,5cm - haven't measured the chain) which should leave an adjustment of 6 cm. Not much more play than that in the tensioner.... Yesterday I checked the price of a rear sprocket carrier with bearings and it's NOK1500 (US$230). Not exactly cheap is it.
Almost there Just got to sort out a few more things, headlight, speedo and it's done. Started as standard GS and now, Ohlins rear Rebuilt forks 21 front excel, 18 rear Scorpian can Dakar bodywork EBC disks Renthal chain & sprockets Renthal fat bars Acerbis hand guards and rewired heated grips ABS removed Rallye footrests TT pannier frames And it's the wifes bike Pete
Looks like you're running the GS centerstand. How's that working out the longer rear travel ? Looks like the rear tire is sitting on the ground (asking cause I'm adding an Öhlins and a TT centerstand to mine)
That's funny Jim, because your wife's bike would have flat tires, loose bolts, enough gas in the tank to get her to the middle of DV, and the frame would most likely break from a strange crack in the frame that resembles a saw blade cut .
I don't appreciate it when you repeat private conversations we've had. You know my wife is a "home entertainment center".... If I had your squaw I would'nt have sawed off the passenger pegs anyhow.
Gravel, It is the OE centre stand, the bike is a GS not a Dakar with standard length shock, the reason the rear is on the ground is because of the 18" rear wheel and fat tyre. Looking to ship over a pair of Koubalinks to bring it back to standard ride height. HTH Pete
In that case, is anyone using the stock centre stand with the Dakar? What about an aftermarket one or something else compatible? I know it decreases clearance and there are a few other small issues, but if you can live with those I'd interested in knowing if it fits and works.
Hello All, I just picked up a '03 Dakar and am putting together a list of tools, spares etc. I was wondering if anyone else has done so and might help me keep from missing something important. Also, anyone seen this DVD? https://www.expeditionexchange.com/globeriders/ Thanks! pyrate
Mic, I'm still waiting for headlight to turn up, there will be a four inch hole cut in the screen for the light. I've got an www.acewell.co.uk speedo on order also. Cheers Pete
