Can anyone tell me if the oil filters used on the 1200GS and on the 800GS are the same thing?

I see that the parts numbers differ but are they structurally different?

Just checking 'cos I just got a new 1200 as well as an 800 and I will do my own maintenance.

    Thanks.

Not sure about the 800 GS but the one on my 800ST and the GSA are the same. There are others you can use for 800 ST from.
    Purolator PL 10241?PL25230
    Mobil1 M1-102
    Bosch 3330
    Supertech ST 3614
All these will fit ST You need the lower profile for the GSA due to the skid plate.
    Hope this helps some anyways.
The reason for the different numbers is the washer that comes with them for the drain plug are different.

Hmmm. Well BMW shows different part numbers but they sure do look the same. However, k&n, Mann, hiflo and others list the same number for both. Are you just basing the difference off the BMW number or do you know something I don't?

    Same filters fit..no problem..and if'n you use K&N..it would be a 164..

    Amsoil would be a Eao51

Like i said the different number is due to the plug washer. Filter is the same.

Not saying you couldnt get the 800 filter to fit but I am holding both in my hand currently at the shop. The 800 is a deeper filter with much more space between the threads and the filter housing than the 1200, and the ridges around the rim for a filter wrench are quite different. Hence why I have two different filter wrenches for the 1200 and 800... different filters.

these are OEM filters I am comparing

Well i'll be. The 2 i had here were the same. Not sure what to say. I do use them(OEM) but also used Hi flow and the ones i listed from other suppliers. Some are taller but on ST it is no issue. Threads and diameter all match. I change oil often so am not as worried about the filter element. I have not found any that will actually give you their spec's as to filtration particle size etc. Is it a GS/GSA thing?

WIX does and they have a filter for both of your bikes.

Curious. I also had two OEM filters and they were identical looking. Oh well.

Not only were they never the same to begin with, the old stubby F800/650 has been replaced with a longer filter than the original stubby version.
