We set a rule of 500k or 5 o'clock for our rides. Also we try to take the secondary highways which are far less busy.

Make your own schedule and make it fun. Actually just put the BMWs in the shed today for their winters nap. We have a couple KLRs that will stay out for some fall back road riding on the nice days. They go to bed after the first snow

Thanks for a great ride report!

I stayed at the Mansion House in 1986 while on a hunting trip to Buffalo, WY. Some of those pics brought back great memories of that trip. I'd love to be able to do it on a bike.

You picked some good places and a great time of year to go for a ride.

I'm a big fan of Montana and Wyoming - born in Wyoming, grew up in Montana, ride my motorcycle out there when I can - so your photos brought back some good memories. Love Northern Minnesota too, so I enjoyed seeing the pics of the leaves changing on the way north from Detroit Lakes to Walker and back to home.

I've spent some time in Canada over the years and think your neck of the woods in Ontario (Lake of the Woods in particular) is a special place.

If you get a chance, and haven't already, another interesting way to get into Yellowstone Park is through Columbus, Absarokee, Red Lodge Montana and up the Beartooth Highway.

I had other commitments this summer so no long rides for me, but thank you for sharing yours.

Yes that is the way we went into the Park back in 2000 but we were in a mini van. Needs to be redone on a bike. We plan to go back to Jackson and continue our trip down Hwy 89 in the next year or 2 so maybe then.

Yes sometimes life gets in the way.

Awesome report and pictures, thanks for sharing. My husband and I are setting off for a multi-state adventure in a few weeks - it's our first one! So it was really nice to read your report and to see what your experiences were on the road. Looking forward to the next installment!

It is kind of a unique place and like all unique places has its own interesting history

I have enjoyed your telling of your first bike trip. I told my wife about you and your trip for two reasons. One she has talked a bit about getting her license for a bike and two, here name is Denise, LOL
She enjoys riding on the back of my GSA but every once in a while she talks about her own bike. We are a few years older that you guys (55) but enjoy our time on the bike.
I have done that trip with a male friend, the route was a bit different because I live in London On.
I am familiar with your home town, we have cousins in Red lake so I have been to or through Dryden many times.
    Thanks again

Getting your beginners is pretty easy. Just a written test then you can drive just about anywhere (except 400 series etc) Minimal investment and if she finds it is not what she wants to pursue then no big loss.

You are not that far off. Garth is 58 this month and Denise is 51. Nothing like driving your own bike is there? Always a passenger until you get your own motorcycle!

    Yes it was not fun.
If you want to go west you have to cross the Great Plains and typically it means wind. 5 trips and that has proven true every time. Tolerate or trailer I suppose.

Thanks for posting. I recognize many places on your route. The hot springs at Thermopolis are great(free)....I had to smile when you said you were pulling into Williston at 6:30, good luck getting a parking spot never mind a room! that place is nuts. Looking forward to part 2......

Thanks, putting it together while it snows out sure makes me wish for summer to go on a bit longer.

Time to start planning trip 3.
