    Slide (vs. CV) carb, but . . . ain't a pumper, IIRC.

Harley CV40's have accelerator pumps; Kawasaki actually had at one time a CVK40 with accelerator pump for a cruiser. Mounting challenges are manifold (no pun intended) when implanting an accelerator-pumped CV carb onto a KLR650, men say.

It's not a given that fuel mileage will be affected negatively. On the KLX250's the TM34 and TM36 actually improve fuel mileage when jetted properly. I'm running the TM36-68 on my '06 KLX250S with a 300 cylinder. It was one of the best mods I've done to this bike. I've had 4 KLR600/650's over many years, and I think I'd find a way to install the Mikuni HS40 which is the exact same carb as my TM36...just 2mm bigger.

Bearing in mind, the bike still weights 425 pounds... Throwing a little more gasoline at the fire isn't going to make it get up and TANGO.

Pumper? Who needs that if you got two carbs?:deal

For real though, I believe every big thumper needs a pumper if you're going to be whacking the throttle.

I think the purpose of the accelerator pump was to address the fuel-lean condition at the instant of rapid and full throttle opening, an issue independent of the number of carbs.

23" front wheel is to make the freeway more fun, duh! The 80's were awesome, lot's of money wasted on designing motorcycles. Companies don't take weird chances anymore.

I was just kidding, shit, I already know that! That's why I want to do something like these carbs when I'm rich and crazy. Modern dual carbs with a pumper. :evil He says the bike is a hoot!

Yes - in hindsight, I must agree with you.

Even with no pumper carb, fun can be had on the KLR.

Primary benefit is the accelerator pump for sure, but the smooth bore and flat slide of the more sophisticated, modern pumper carb is also a plus...you just can't feel it in the seat-of-the-pants like you can with the shot of fuel from the AP.

Im running a 05 EU model with a Mikuni TM42 (or TM42-6 or HSR42 , it's the same), the difference with the cvk was dramatic. Combined with a performance airfilter (uni or kn), 685 or bigger bore, and a performance exhaust and header (like fmf powerbomb) and makes the 650 into a rocket. If you dont know how it works, it will be a pain in the a$$ to tune. My problem was that it functioned properly except bogging in wide open throttle, which was caused from bad squirt timing of gasoline into the engine (dont know how to say it more simple in english). The only flat slide carbs that work with the klr650 is the Mikuni TM40 and the TM42 and the Lectron for klr650 regarding clearance. The Keihin FCR-39 and FCR-41 (as well as 39MX and 41MX which are bigger) WILL NOT FIT because they have more height than the Mikunis and they cannot get aligned because of the electric starter on top of the clutch blocking the way. If you ride like crazy with the throttle open all the time, expect a maximum 20 km decrease in mileage, riding "excited-but-normal" would be pretty much the same with the cvk. Riding "normal-to-law abide" would even get you better mileage than the stock cvk. Also, do not use the stock cvk choke cable system with a mikuni as it is more wide letting air to pass (like having 1/5 of the choke open all the time).

It took some fooling around with an A/F meter to get the jetting right, but a Harley pumper carb seems to work OK on my XR650L. Mileage is pretty good - 48 to 50 MPG on the road.

I disagree, the carb replacement makes a sig. improvement in throttle response. Add a big bore and you can feel the power.
