1968 Yamaha DT1 Treasure/Trash?

That looks just like the 1970 DT1 I picked up last year for free off of craigslist. Good to see that you and your dad were both into atgatt.

it was a good time even got tangeled up with a brakeless Indian :eek1
and was able to run down a '07 KX250F and pass him in the main I had a blast cant wait to do it again.
and the homemade shoe held up really good

Friday saw me and Dennis Kanegae ready to practice at the track in Airway Heights...
Yeah, I got 4 laps in before ignition gremlins brought the '68 DT1 to a halt.
Dennis had a sputtering engine that never really ran right.
Race gas solved the problem for Dennis, but finding a coil that would make the DT1 happy was another thing.
Dennis raced Saturday, I pitted for him....

I had ignition problems with my Sonic Weld DT1 that wouldn't quit, no matter how many NOS parts I threw at it. I finally replaced it with a PVL unit I don't know why I didn't do that first. It starts and runs a lot better with that ignition.

Thanks Don, I'd been looking at the PVL. Not sure how much more I want to risk my neck with stock frame, forks and rear shocks!!! The '68 is probably going to become a conversation piece in my family room. Denny's CRF450 inspired me.....

There's no risk in racing You need to keep the vintage bikes going. WFO on a half mile with no rear suspension or brakes. The old Betor forks are not much better than the stock Yami's. It's a blast, wouldn't have it any other way

That is depressing that you are thinking of not running that sweet DT-1 and moving up to some modern bike. If need be, I'd be happy to continue racing that bike for you

Yup... It's a long story. Best told over several dark carbonated beverages that are the end result of grain being allowed to ferment.

A buddy had the TS185 with Suzukis version of a gyt kit,the swingarm flexed like rubber and the shocks/forks were atrocious. It ran well with the kit though and flattracked ok.
The 200 Sherpa was like a dream after the Hodaka I raced for 2 years,the Bul loved to go sideways and got great starts once the forks were lowered and shorter shocks installed. Shifting was an issue at times,as was popping out of gear.
I have a 69 TS250 engine sitting here,the width and weight of the thing are amazing,heavy enough to be a 4 stroke.
So it went in the old days.

Betor forks no better then stock fish oil yammie forks? Dude! they are way smoother with actual damping and nice alloy clamps. Yamaha forks back in the day just clacked and clanked and flexed. They could be made to work better but not a lot.

Same here Jeff. 30 years. It's not her fault, but mine. Life goes on....

A few vintage shows may be in it's future, but for now we plan on spending the snowy winter months watching AMA Supercross and MotoGP races that I have on the DVR to get me to Spring.
