wow just got them will look at the loading of them onto my GPS this weekend awesome ..THANKS FOR THE WORK.
THANKS FOR THIS!! And seriously. When you make it out, PM me! Would be great to hear the Bivouac stories over a campfire and a cuppa. Brimstone
What a project guys! Amazing! I have just downloaded the file from the website and loaded it into Google Earth. Since Google Earth takes ages to load the entire thing, I only selected the SK trail. When following the route, I found a couple of gaps in between the trails. It this with reason? Or is Google Earth acting up?
Dont worry called Google from my Iphone and they said that they are on it like BMW's on Starbucks, but for now you can use apple maps to find your way. For better location services to enable Siri and she will guide you Nice people there are Google.. even said next time I call them they will take me out. Have to ask Siri whats a good restaurant around me??? Thanks Google
I realize that not everyone will be running this thing all at once. Seems like many will be doing a section at a time. To make it easier to sort things, I am changing the labels on the 900+ waypoints to indicate what section (generally provinces) the waypoints are in. Most of the waypoints are already grouped by type (gas, hospitals, dealers, etc) so they are easy to manage. With the new labels, one will be able to separate a subset of each category specific to a section (i.e. all dealers in MB, or all gas in SK, or all camping on VI). This will also make it easier for someone searching waypoints on the trail. If you were looking through the dealer waypoints on your GPS while you are riding the TCAT, you would find them labeled (and thus ordered) by section. So, for someone riding only a portion of the TCAT, it would be easy to build a custom file for your trip by snipping out the waypoints and tracks that pertain to the section you plan to ride and putting them in your own file. Makes for a tidier file that uses less capacity and for more flexibility in planning. This will be included in the next major revision.
Absolutely! I'm working on producing some PDF files that can be printed for the die-hard paper navigation types. What I'm working towards is an overview map of each 'region' (Island, Taiga, Prairies, etc) as well as per-day or per-section map at a larger scale showing more detail. Very rough in-progress screen shots here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/92996760/TCAT/Island%20-%20Section%201.jpg http://dl.dropbox.com/u/92996760/TCAT/Island Overview.jpg The overview maps will be 22"x34". If you have access to large format printing, you'll be laughing. I will also make these overview maps available in a tiled format, so you can print 4 sheets @ 11x17 (with a little overlap added) to produce the same end result. The individual section maps will vary based on size and shape. Some will be able to be produced on a single 11x17 sheet, some may require tiled layouts. In any case, there WILL be PDF maps available for the non-GPS types out there.
Hi Oldone: I am 71yrs; sold my F650 last Sept. 2012; planning on having a DR200 or XT225 by spring; then I am going to hit the trails, so no you are not too old if you don't think you are. Where I live we have the abandoned railway trail 5 mins from my house, and I intend to be on it going everywhere Take care.
Once again, BRAVO! I remember when I did a one day "reco" with Ted and friends, 2 or 3 years ago... Wow The TCAT Team work is amazing
Gary, I will be 72 this summer. Have ridden from SC to Prudohe Bay,and back which included about 2000 mi of dirt at 67. Did the TAT at 69. Did the Forever West route at 70. Have ridden several duel sport routes around the south eastern part of the US. I plan on doing the TCAT in 2014. Like one said you do not get to old to ride, just to old to fall (really hard) Bill
A friend send me a message about some potential gas place Between Chibougamau and Roberval, 2 places 1- "Relais Barrière du Nord", around 50Km south of Chibougamau... Maybe open only during winter (snowmobile) 2- South of "Scierie 54", km178 on road 167. Caféteria open on worker lunch time. not sure it still exists
One still is still the other no longer exists. I'm a dumb ass and forgot to make a waypoint and using satellite maps I can't seem to pinpoint it. The range between Parent and Chibougamau is doable for gas range without this stop so I skipped it on the gps files. I'll be back up there in the spring and will be more diligent in recording its location In the route description there is a photo of it and a description, cool spot in the middle of nowhere to kick back and have a cold one and even spend a night . The section from Parent to Chibougamau is top drawer. Fun, wide, sandy roads with a way out there remote feeling. One of my favorite stretches of the TCAT
Hi Deadly99, It's me who gave infos and the picture of us on the Bazin bridge to Rhino! I'll ask a friend who know's this region and see the correct info for the possibility of gaz stations on paved road between Chibougamau and Roberval. I didn't follow all your interesting thread about the making of your trail. Since I was a child, I did many hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and dual-sport traveling in Québec back roads. If you want, send me the track of the Québec section between the south part and Chibougamau. I'll check if I can add you some infos about gaz point or place to stay. If you have some questions, just email me! Eric
Thanks Eric, I'll get in touch Well bummer this thread got moved but I suppose it was no longer a ride report now that the route is complete. Upwards and onwards I suppose, I for one look forward to reading others folks TCAT ride reports in the future. Please ensure you make sure younhave the most recent version of the files before heading out. The gpx files will be bundled with detailed PDF maps and a text doc with some important info in the next release. We're still working away on the route descriptions and will hopefully have them complete before the riding season starts this spring. Like always, stoked with all the support this project received from people from across the country. I think as a collective group we did something pretty outstanding Cheers Ted
Post 2530 mentions pdf map file. Will this have the coordinates imbedded for use on ipad/iphone pdf avenza map reader ? So the gps on the ipad/iphone works on the pdf map?
I'l lbe exporting the PDF files straight out of ESRI ArcMap with geocoding enabled. So yes, they should be readable from any device/application that supports that feature.
