I mentioned in several postings using hot patches when doing tube repairs in the field. Several persons have PM me for info about the clamp. Info and pictures below. Hot patches work great on all tubes, HD tubes, regular tubes and tubes with slime or other sealent in them. Regular glue patches don't want to stick very good to HD tubes or tubes with sealant in them. Tubes with sealeant in them have to have all sealent removed from the outside of the tube. Gas works OK to do this. I use plumbers open mesh abrasive cloth to clean and ruff the tube before patching. Note: I usually replace the tube with 1 of my spare tubes and repair the holy tube after the days riding. Many have asked where to get hot patches. The EPA banned the sale of hot patches in the USA. I have found a new source of patches in Tiwian. Don't know about the quality yet. If you can't find any in your area PM me and maybe I will have more info later. motu You made an excellent observation. I was in a hurry to make the clamp for this posting, I forgot to cut notches in the second washer to let you light the patch when in the clamp. gatogato I have never had a bike I needed a bead breaker.?? katbeanz & bass_on_tap In reference to repairing at the end of the day I am refering to multi-day rides BAJA etc. "Not end of ride at home." I do carry 2 tubes. I made and easy to use hot patch clamp that fits in you tool bag. Please check out new pictures with the notches in the second washer. https://corky1.smugmug.com/gallery/1078005_VsJg7#444950938_6w4bd Any questions PM me. Thanks for looking.
That's pretty slick, I'm a big fan of hot patches too. I'm a little goosey about hauling them on the bike though.
Why would you be goose about hauling them?? I pack about 6 of them in a box just like the clamp is in. Corky
Where can you get those hot patches? Used em when I was a kid, they came from Sears with a clamp much like the one you've made. Worked better than any patch hands down. Every time I've asked someone about them, they look at me like I said "Gooney Goo Goo" or something.
I think what katbeanz means is exactly what I was thinking, neat idea, but why carry it? You said " I usually replace the tube with my spare tube and repair the holy tube after the days riding." So it begs the question, why carry it?
Maybe if the planets arrange themself just right, you might have a second puncture ? Dont you think ?
Then carry two tubes. Do you think? He said he swaps in a new tube and repairs at home later. If your so paranoid about a flat, then follow his line of thinking and swap then fix.
How do you use it? The original clamps were open so you could clamp, then burn.So do you set it on fire, then clamp when it goes out? Hot fingers???
Something else to think about - "...after the days riding..." might not bring you home. Sometimes you have to carry everything you need with you. Nice job Corky - I've been getting lots of flats lately. I could have used a rig like that in Baja a couple weeks ago.
Can someone please tell me more about hot patching. Why it is better than the glue patches. And where do you get the patches. Thanks
That is a neat setup Corky. As a tire man for the last 20 years, though, I gotta say that I've never, not once, ever, used a hot patch on any of the thousands of repairs that I've done. The tools and supplies for the standard cold vulcanizing patches is so much smaller and lighter to carry, that I really can't see the need for the hot setup. If it works for you, though, and it's what you're comfortable doing on the road or trail, then that's great! I've also learned that the peace of mind that comes with doing what you know can be worth quite a lot. Happy New Year!
This is a bounce. I made several corrections to my origial post and answereed some questions. Check it out. Thanks for looking. Corky
Up date of original posting. Many asked where to get the hot patches? EPA banned sale of them in USA. I was getting them from Canada. They also banned the sale of them. Found another source in Tiawian. http://www.alibaba.com/product/vivatservice-12049101-0/Tire_Hot_Valcunizing_Patch.html I also up dated info on making your own patch kit. https://corky1.smugmug.com/gallery/1078005_VsJg7#448055045_Az32A Thanks for looking. PM with any questions. Corky
