A new riding partner and an adventure into a new season. Tyler was down from Boise on his BMW GS1200 he bought earlier this summer. He is new to dual sport riding, but not to off road. He's had a couple of motocross bikes. I still decided to take it easy and avoid the hard stuff this weekend. Besides, the past two had been pretty high on difficulty scale.

He came to my house at about quarter after seven on Saturday morning. I was ready and we headed North on I-25. A stop for some Denny's breakfast and fuel had us actually making miles by about 9:30.

We got off the boring interstate and rode though Ft. Collins. Tyler did a great job of cutting lanes while I tried to follow the street signs for Hwy 14. A few close calls with traffic and we were out for the city.

Of course there was a ton of traffic in the Poudre Canyon. We sat in the ant trail of cars for way too long. Since this was first time riding, I was unsure of his willingness to pass in the double yellows. Finally, I'd had enough and passed about four cars on the inside when I could see to the next turn. Tyler was right behind me. That settled that. Tyler will pass.

Finally, we got out of the canyon and started to see the color we were looking for.

We had stopped for a quick break here. As soon as we got dressed and moving again, we were stopped by construction for ten minutes. DOH!

Need photo editing software to straighten these out that sometimes come out crooked as I take them while I ride. Recommendations?

Finally off on the gravel. The plan was to cut across a bunch of different gravel roads to link up with Buffalo pass into Steamboat Springs.

Here was where we stopped to drop pressure. Hobbes was squirrely!

Actual haystacks! Didn't know anyone still did this.

DAMMIT!!! CLOSED!!! Well, we could chance it. But, if we can't make it through and have to turn around to back track, we may not make the mileage we need to today. Back to the highway. I always look at these little detours as an excuse to come back.

Back on the pavement of 14 to take us to the summit of Rabbit Ears Pass.

    Rain ahead.

Tyler wanted to add another layer so I took off ahead to find a vantage point for a pic into the valley below.

100 was a good gravel road that led through some high alpine marshy areas. We caught periodic showers of rain along this stretch and it was a little chilly.

I jumped off on 250. Unplanned, but I wanted another view. We found a place and looked into the valley where Kremmling lies. I took a few minutes to enjoy the view while Tyler called his wife. Turned out 250 was actually another way to get to Gore Pass. Worked out great since we were getting a bit down on fuel.

    Moose!

Three F-18's flew low and fast over us here. I missed the pic but the rumble of the jets still hung in the air when this photo was taken.

When 250 ended near the top of Gore Pass, I asked Tyler if he wanted to trade bikes. He agreed and I was excited to ride a GS12 for the first time. Pretty damn comfy bike. Great turn in and very well balanced. But I'll tell you what, the Tiger has a waaaaaaaay smoother engine and transmission. Glad I got to ride it. Now I really know I got the right bike.

We stopped in Yampa for fuel. We were both really low. I decided we should eat at the same place my Dad and I did on our trip through here. This time it was HORRIBLE!! Bunt hockey puck of a burger. BOO!

Next we are off to the Flat Tops Scenic Byway. It really looked like rain up there and I was a little worried about the fire situation while camping for the second weekend in a row.

Remember this pic from the ride to Colorado in my first post?

    Here it is in Fall.

I was stopping every half mile to take a pic! I was just in awe of the beauty here! All the time I've spent in Colorado and I've never been to areas that have color like this. Breckenridge is too high for the Aspens and I never really ventured out to see this. Now my motorcycle brings me here and brings me happiness.

We were also very happy that the gloomy and threatening skies of Yampa turned out to be just threatening. The weather was fantastic! Things were dry and it did make the road a little dusty for Tyler.

On my last trip here I had found a campsite near the summit of Ripple Creek that I really hoped would be open. Turns out it was! Along with every other site at Vaughn Lake. We had the place to ourselves.

Now I know this breaks tradition a bit, setting up in the daylight and all, but I really wanted to find enough wood for a good fire and this was such an awesome spot to spend the night. There was no way we could pass it up.

We dropped our gear and went on a search around the campground for wood. JACKPOT!!! All dry and split. We even had dry newspaper left for us in our site.

We went on a further search for wood back down the pass.

Checking out a few side roads.

K, I think this will be enough.

Tyler only lost two pieces on the way back and had to adjust once.

I wanted to get over Ripple Creek to check out the sunset since we were on the East side of the pass. Off we go!

We are camped on the grove of trees front and center down the hill.

They don't call 'em the Flat Tops for nuthin'!

    Back at camp.

The sunset was fast! The color only lasted about 15 minutes. I took my pics while I could.

I think we'll have enough wood tonight.

Yep. Lasted for bottle of Jameson and a lot of conversation. This was the first time I'd hung out with Tyler outside of work. It was great to get to know him a little better.

    Hello beautiful morning!

We weren't in a rush. A nice leisurely morning with our coffee and oatmeal.

Back on the Flat Tops Byway and clicking miles off to Meeker.

The byway turns back into pavement. Great road with a gentle downward slope.

We are now leaving the Aspen groves as we lose more and more altitude. The desert is approaching.

We were hauling along pretty good and came up really quick on a truck with an orange flag hanging out the window going really slow and blocking the road. I hit the brakes and this is what we had to pick our way through.
Bringing the cattle down from the grazing of the summer. It was the first of three cattle drives we would pass today.

    Back on the gas....

We came into Meeker and found our road to the South. There are two 13's that run parallel to each other. One is paved and one is not. Guess which one we took?

The paved 13 runs on the other side of that hogback to the right.

This was a really cool road and I'm glad we took it. We both enjoyed it immensely.

    Getting close to Rifle, CO.

We got on the interstate and went East 25 miles to Glenwood Springs.

Last time I was here, I commented that I wished I had taken some pictures of Mt. Sopris.

We missed our turn I wanted to take. It was ok. There was another road to get us there. We weren't quite sure until we saw a sign for Cottonwood Pass. Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut and it will work out.

We came up on a few two-smoker KTMs. Of course they don't have mirrors, so they don't know we are behind them. They were just puttin' along. Finally they saw us and kind of pulled over, but didn't slow down at all. I hit my rev limiter as I passed the lead guy.

Cottonwood Pass was pretty, but very anti-climatic. I'm not even really sure at what point we passed a summit.

    Gypsum is over there somewhere.

We headed South on 412 which is called Gypsum Creek Rd.

I picked an inopportune time to photograph this beautiful stream. It just wasn't the best place. There were a bunch of great places but I never got a shot. You can't win 'em all.

We hit our second cattle drive of the day around here. Didn't take a pic this time.

We made a right on 413, Powerline road. Yes, there is a big powerline there.

This is one of my favorites from all of these beautiful pics. Riding through a frickin postcard all day!

The road to the right turns into a thin red line on my map. Maybe another time.....

We made another right onto Brush Creek (400), which climbs over Crooked Creek Pass and then links up with Frying Pan Rd.

We stopped here and just enjoyed our surroundings for a moment.

We made a left on Frying Pan Road and headed for Haggerman Pass. Tyler wanted to try a something a little harder. Haggerman isn't bad, but more challenging than what we've done so far.

    Turquoise Lake outside Leadville.

    <a href="http://s73.photobucket.com/albums/i230/tystellrecht/2011%2010-1%20to%2010-2%20Fall%20Colors%20Tour/?action=view&amp;current=P1020614.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="https://www.advrider.com/advrider-photobucket-images/images/t/tystellrecht_2011%252010-1%2520to%252010-2%2520Fall%2520Colors%2520Tour_P1020614.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And that was the last pic I took. We had debated going over Mosquito Pass, but home and the Sunday night football game sounded better. We stopped in Leadville for some Subway. We hadn't eaten all day! Too many pretty trees to look at to be concerned with food.

On the way down I-70 we hit traffic. Stop and go for 30 miles. Apparently we weren't the only ones checking out the fall colors. The traffic was as bad as skier traffic in the winter heading back to Denver. But, I'll put money on it that we saw way better fall colors than the average SUV sitting in that traffic.

    Until next time....

Yes and yes. The meet and greet was a simple fix. Just bolt on new parts. I also got the low fuel and high beam inticators tinted. I did a DIY and posted it in the tiger thread about two weeks ago.

Wonderful thread! I started following you because I was curious about the Tiger, bought one, now I follow because I love the scenery! Great work man, a true inspiration!

You asked about photo editing software... a good topic for its own thread! I use Photoshop, and Lightroom (mostly Lightroom). I would suggest Lightroom if you are really into it, if your not, Photoshop Elements is good and reasonably priced.

    Keep up the good work!:beer

Holy crap!!! I was all the way back on page five!!!

Hobbes has been at the Vet. He sounded terrible when I started him up after installing my heated grips. Something internal. Sounded like a valve noise at first, but then almost like a chunk of metal in the cylinder bouncing around. Stealership pulled the throttle bodies and valve cover off. Everything looked normal. They pulled the motor and are going deeper. They did agree that something major was wrong when we started it. Only took ten seconds and that was enough.

    I'm pretty pissed.
    1. My bike is broke and I missed the last few weekends of riding in the mountains. On the cycle that is....
    2. I had to "AUTHORIZE" $600 of troubleshooting! This is a six month old bike with 8500 miles!! This damn well better be covered under warranty. What could I have possible done? Oh yeah, they gave me shit about not bringing it in for the 300 and 6000 mile services. "That might not be good, " the service manager said. I almost went over the counter and punched him the mouth. I can change my own oil, thanks.
    3. It's been there for two weeks with out a single phone call to update me. Don't you think I am curious how my $12000 motorcycle is doing with the engine torn out?!?!?!?!? They told me another job mushroomed into something huge and my bike got pushed back on the schedule. DON'T YOU THINK I'D LIKE TO KNOW THAT YOU BUNCH OF ASSHOLES?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "I guess we should have called you." YOU FUCKING THINK SO?!?!? Didn't even get a sorry and still don't have a resolution or cause. They were supposed to call me today. Think I got a call? Take a wild fucking guess.

Too bad Sisneros Speed Works in your neck of the woods doesn't work on Triumphs (I think?)..... he'd probably already have you back on the road..... or at least in the loop.
