    Hi Everyone,

Me and my mate are starting to plan our adventure for the middle of this year and want to catch the gahn up to Darwin from Adelaide and start our trip from Darwin on the bikes.

However... Is it possible to transport bikes on the gahn, if not what's a good transport company that can take them up and securely store them until we arrive?

    Has anyone done anything similar?

Weekly I work on the Ghan changing out boogies and motors at their rail yard at Keswick.

It has a car carrying wagon so you might be in luck.

    give them a tingle.

Unfortunately those car wagons are only good for cars, and from their website http://www.greatsouthernrail.com.au/site/the_ghan/taking_your_car.jsp it doesn't mention Motorbikes :(

I might have to give them a call and see what the chances are of getting a wagon or something, or just rock up and try to bribe someone :p

There are carriages that just supply electricity to the train, 3 diesel engines and a stack of room around them. I haven't been right thru the train but it is a biggie.
Still worth a call and you might just snag talking to the right person

They are not set up to roll a bike on and off or tie them down. The only way would be if you crate your bike so it can be forked on and off.

Riding the highway is boring, been there done that and it took 3 days to get from Uluru to home so more like 4-5 days, on a already time restricted trip

Plus we want to ride the gahn supposably it's a good trip lol

The hope is by transporting the bikes up there we can enjoy the one way trip home and not have to do a major push to get to the start

Lean into every curve like on rails.

Start your motorcycle tour rested and fresh, bypass unattractive route sections or continue your tour without any risk in case of sudden bad weather.

Your motorcycle will be transported safely and trouble-free on the motorail train. You just park your motorcycle near the vehicle transporter at the station and the loading team will take the necessary steps to secure it. Loading and transport safety is optimally ensured with a new lashing system.
For operational reasons, vehicles are transported in the opposite direction of travel on certain (parts of) routes.
Any windshields of motorbikes are secured additionally.
You are the one who knows your vehicle best. Please assist us in finding the right fastening points.

Make yourself comfortable on the train, while your motorcycle is travelling with you safely and at low cost.

If you are travelling during the night, dream of the next curves you will overcome in a comfortable couchette or sleeper compartment.

Why is it so easy in other places?

My brother hired a container that had side openings as well as an end opening, They fitted 2 Harleys, 6 Motards and 2 Quads in it for about $2000.00, otherwise ride next to the Ghan line on the maintenance track, I'm sure it wont be dull, wasn't in my Hilux the last time I drove it. :D
