I have a question for the more informed out there. I may be able to buy a 2009 F800gs, but it seams like it needs a new engine, I don't really have much information on it, but if that is the case, Could the 2009 engine be replaced with a 2012??? Is it the very same engine??? I know they make some changes on the bike from early 2009 f800gs , but is the engine still the same??? Thank you for your help
Hmmmm..... I see you didn't get any replies. Probably cause everyone went "WHY?????" Where ya gonna get a 2012 engine? In Canada they're $10 grand plus tax. That's a lot of new parts to fix the old.......A brand new bike is $9800 here. Just sayin'.
Actually...slight hi jack. Anyone know the life of these engines? I have head about 80000km Anyone know if you can transplant the F800R engine in there? Just because....thats why
I'll bet both blocks and cylinders are the same just mounted differently in the frame. Look at the cover on the right side of both bikes. The BMW logo is horizontal on our bikes and tilted downward on the R. I would worry more about the electronics and gear ratio being the same. GH
The R engines are silver, the GS is black! That alone.......... :eek1 I'm sure we could theorize all day. You have to put them side by each. I've worked on enough of either and i don't see it happening. Being different colours means that the pn's will be different even if the part is otherwise identical so you'd have to investigate. Don't forget one is belt drive and the other chain and I know the output shaft is different so no swapping sprockets. I'd say it was a waste of time but then I'm not that bored yet. There are turbines and diesels in bikes though. Like I said, if there's a will.....
The 800R and ST are NOT identical and will not fit. The latter use an aluminum frame with different mounting locations to the gs's steel frame, and furthermore the larger 800gs wheel will not clear the forward banked cylinders of the R and ST.
Why even bother. I have a 2009 F800gs with 90,000km on it. Runs great. Uses no oil and has no issues. You say that the bike you are looking at "needs a new engine". What does that mean. For the effort in replacing it, you could just as easy fix the one in it.
I was about to get a bike with a bad engine, the block had a crack. I found a 2012 engine but the bike was a 2009. "BOTH ARE F650GS BLACK TWINS" The project is off, I was able to buy the engine but couldn't get the bike. Really bad timing. Now I have an extra engine for sale. It came out of a 2012 with less than 10 miles on it. I just don't known what a fair price for sale would it be. Yep, makes much more sense now. Guess it depends how much you have into it. $ plus your trouble. Seems to have everything and the ABS pump too. Price it too high and only the desperate guy who blew his engine would pay. I'd love it for spares but you're too far away. We do have a flea market here tho. $X obo.
The bike had a crack on the engine block, lost all oil and they kept on riding. It was a rental, the guy didn't care.
