Hey All, Anybody have a source for BMW factory paint or paint codes I could take to my local bodyshop supply place? My 1986 R80RT is still wearing the original Yukon Blue paint and it has yellowed a little bit and has a few dents I would like to fill so looking for where I can get the paint. I have found some place in england that claims to have all BMW factory paint but there are no color chips available and I really don't want to deal with customer service half a world away. suggestions?
yeah I saw those codes and that site and much like honda paint codes and those from other manufacturers they have no meaning to a paint shop or dupont.
You told them it's a BMW color code and they couldn't take it from there? Go to a paint shop that deals with Glasurit paints. They are the original paints used on your bike. Here is the formula for your original paint using glasurit base colors (mixes 1 liter): BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE 202 YUKONBLAU MET 1984-1990 Base Amount Cumulative UNIT M4 721.0 721.0 g M010 32.0 753.0 g M011 26.0 778.9 g A926 159.2 938.1 g A589 42.8 980.9 g A427 13.0 993.9 g A306 10.0 1003.9 g A032 2.0 1005.9 g
Thanks! yeah my local body shop supply store deals almost all with dupont and not Glasurit. They have a book that only goes back to the mid 1990s for converting the bmw codes to dupont. I didn't even think to look up a glasruit dealer.
Ask your local BMW dealership service dept who they farm their body and paint work out to. They should be able to mix it for you.
My two local (long Island) BMW dealers have in-house body shops. I have about half a dozen friends of mine work for them over the years and I have a better chance of turning pink and playing Fur Elise out my butthole than I do getting anything motorcycle related painted by them for any amount of money. When I had my 2002 and my E30 convertible I asked manhattan BMW who they farm it out to - you would think I just asked to have sex with everyone in the dealership's sister at the same time. New Yorkers aren't known for being helpful. What's funny is that my friends that worked for subaru had no qualms about painting stuff for me in their paint booth so long as I wasn't picky about the color - basically they would paint my stuff the color of whatever car was getting painted that day. I ended up with a lot of World Rally Championship blue motorcycles for a while. Actually I know a body shop that might have it as they are the body shop for my local Audi Dealer and I am guessing all german cars use BASF for their paint. I wanted to shoot this myself though so we will see how helpful they are about procuring a quart of paint that they aren't going to pass through their gun.
These guys will mix it for you for $160 /quart. :eek1 http://www.thepaintersedge.com/categories/paint/mixed-paint.html
hey wrangler, Do you think a quart is enough to do 2 tanks (one is a 5 gal tank), 2 seat cowls, 4 side covers, and 2 front fenders? Or do you think I would need more than that?
No idea. Glasurit claims that 2 liters is enough to paint a whole car. Depends how much you thin it, how many coats, etc. I don't have much painting experience so I won't even venture a guess.
