The technical regulations say;

• Minimum one rear view mirror.

Is this really mandatory, because a rear view mirror on a rally bike isn't exactly common

Almost all rallies I have raced in Greece require this, I think it has to do with the fact that Rally bikes are obliged to be road-worthy (lights, horn etc)

just pick up an Acerbis folding one, or even better support Ned

Are you serious? Or is it only necessary for scrutineering? In the pictures from last year there isn't a single bike with a rear view mirror. Actually, I never saw a bike with a rear view mirror on a rally :huh

@HellasRally: what are the costs of a day license for the entire rally for foreign competitors?

If you are looking for a quick-fix, I'd recommend one of these cycle mirrors - A Zefal 'spy' (bottom left of photo) - I've used them on all my race bikes, and if it passes FIM scrutineering on Dakar, then you shouldn't have any problems... it actually works ok too (you can just see a car behind me in the photo) as you look under your elbow...



Obviously it's not as good as a larger mirror for regular use, but it stays out of the way and as such is pretty indestructible. Remember that 'technically', the Scrutineers can inspect your bike at any point during a rally, and if it doesn't comply, are at liberty to exclude you from that stage until the problem is rectified (or in Dakar, you're out!)

I have one fitted all the time. Really usefull in Liaisons, not only for cars but also to keep an eye if you are riding with friends and want to check that they are keeping up without straining your neck

Ok found the line in the Technical Regs about the Rear view mirror. See below!

CROSS-COUNTRY RALLY MOTORCYCLES
GENERAL
All vehicles must conform in all respects to the 1968 Vienna Convention, even
if the country in which the machine was manufactured is not a signatory to that
Convention, and be registered for road use.
Lighting and safety equipment
Lighting equipment for all categories must conform in every way to the International
Convention on road traffic, moreover:
The original headlights and rear lights may be modified or replaced. Extra lights
may be added.
Each motorcycle/quad must be equipped with at least:
• A front light (min 55 watts or equivalent in ‘lumen’)
• A generator with a required performance to support all requirements
• An audible horn, minimum 90 dB/A, measured at one metre.
• Minimum one rear view mirror.
• A fixed water tank of 3 litres or a camel back with an equivalent quantity
All motorcycles/quads must carry the necessary survival equipment as requested
in the general regulations of the race.

This rear view mirror is an issue on going as many years as I am involved in racing
Aesthetically a mirror on a racing bike is not a nice spectacle, but practically and legally solves a lot of problems and definitely prevents of troubles.
Basic fact, all liaison stages are in public roads under the traffic law where the vehicles should be 100% street legal.
Here in Greece we managed to exclude original metal license plates and accept paper or plastic copies. But this is it.
To my point of view since I am a rider with a quad, which is much safer than a bike, the mirror helped me a lot to prevent my bike and me when a superfast car was coming after a fuel pump problem.

Has any one got anything arranged to get from athens airport to the bivouac they would share with me, the plane I am on lands at 12.35 on the 19th and I believe there is a minibus layed on but not until after 8 o clock, nice as athens no doubt is I do not fancy walking around with my luggage for 8 hours.

Where in Athens does the minibus depart from at 8pm?
