Gun free utopia. Maybe, I came because understanding this cultural difference would make me larger in wisdom. Regarding that we never could make you think like "us" isn´t my goal. Why should I. I think you sound hostile or maybe we just speak different(cultures). I did not enter the debate with the thought of being the better person.

I do not have any solutions for this shooting incident. It´s a tragedy and i can´t stand see those teddybears outside the school. I´m stunned.
It is not only gun control but way more deep in your culture/school/education/healthcare you maybe would find the solution. Gun control is just one step of many to reach political goals regarding lifting social inheritance. The evolution of culture is dependent on the evolution of social learning. If not this is attended I think your gun policy could be the Nemesis.

But as i never have lived in US and is grown up in fluffy Denmark, I may not understand this lust for protecting.

I should probably stick to my bike.

not sure what you mean here, could you elaborate?

Now this I agree with - the problem cannot and will not be addressed by any laws regarding guns - the problems in this country are certainly seated much deeper in our culture (or lack thereof)

A irresponsible parent decides to be her mentally unstable son's friend instead of a parent and gives him access to instruments that are very dangerous in the wrong hands and now over two dozen people are dead.

I think Wayne said all there needs to be said in today's press conference. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

I have to clarify...I see this misused all the time. A clip is used in a rifle like the Garand. Casings are exposed.

The enclosed ammo dispensing device an AR or Glock uses is a magazine.

Not germane to the argument/discussion, Smithy. Everyone down here knows exactly WTF is meant by 'clip' and 'mag'. Quit parsing terms and offer some ideas, sir

I see this as a very viable solution to the problem of children being shot in school.

But apparently we aren't discussing solutions so lets ignore that.

I think that we need to call for the regulation and control on the purchase and carry of Baseball Bats. These UNLICENSED and UNREGULATED weapons are favored by Street Gangs and Mafia Thugs around the country and need to be regulated and TAXED!

From Little Leaguers to Professionals a Tax on these Dangerous Weapons would Protect our Children and line lots of pockets.

Of course the Politicians answer to everything is to pass more laws. It's what they do. Pass a law to control something and then tax it. Carbon-dioxide tax?

From Milton FL. The Anus of the Bible Belt

P.S. Heres an Idea. Make the Legislators repeal a law for every one they pass.

I remember when Milton FL had the highest number of churches per capita.

It was also the year we had the highest number of murders per capita.

    Neat coincidence hmn?

An armed guard at each school may or may not help. But it is worth noting that Virginia Tech, like all campuses, has an entire police department devoted especially to protecting their campus and the body count there was even hire than in Newtown. And Ft. Hood was a military base!

There are a lot of quick easy answers being thrown around, but none of them -- not a single one -- withstands much scrutiny. Like I said, I'm baffled.

Guns are not the issue, Mental Health treatment is. There are too many children that never receive the help they need until they become violent offenders. As many of you know Mata is an early childhood intervention specialist serving those lowest on the economic scale. She sees more and more seriously fucked up toddlers and pre-schoolers each year.:2cry
These potential monsters can be identified as young as 2 years old but policy makers don't give a damn, Momma is a crack hoe or working 3 jobs, and Daddy is long gone. Their world view is shaped by watching thugs on MTV, heinous violence on cable, and unspeakable mayhem in video games. What chance to these kids have? No one gives a shit until they become violent and the we spend a $129 per day to pen them up. :gun2
Mata is seeking funding of about $100 a day to have therapist come in to Her center a couple of times a week to treat these kids and no one cares. Instead of treatment a couple times a week for a few years the system will pay to house them as inmates for 20 yrs.:huh
While I feel Reagan was one of our best Presidents, his biggest failure was cutting mental Health funding and turning the mentally ill out on the street.
The US needs to stop being the worlds policeman, get the fuck out of the Middle East, and spend those dollars on our children.

    So true.

Unfortunately, it won't happen. There's more money at stake in the oil and defense industries than in child care and mental health.

Anyway, all those little kiddies are angels and deserve their very own dvd player in the back seat of the luxury suv so mommy and daddy don't have to deal with them.

I concur wholeheartedly. No quick easy answers, and a new assault weapons ban is going to be sold to the American public as just that. Everybody wins, right? The lawmakers get to feel good about passing new laws to "solve the problem," and the Dumb Masses feel good about their enhanced safety. And the wheel goes round and round.:rolleyes

Certainly steps need to be taken to keep guns out of the hands of deranged psychopaths. Everybody agrees with that. How to go about doing that is problematic. What if aforementioned deranged psychopaths have never sought treatment, and have never committed a crime? Who gets to say they're mentally unfit to own a firearm, and what do you use for the specific criteria? Juvenile history? Past suicide attempt? Privacy issues come into play quickly.

Here's a good question: could Adam Lanza have legally obtained the firearms he used in that massacre? Pretty sure the answer is yes. He tried to buy a rifle of some sort, and didn't want to wait for the required 14-day waiting period: http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/...y-rifile-days-before-20121215,0,5913090.story

Say he had waited. Wouldn't he have been given the green light? No prior felonies. No dishonorable discharges. Going on the info we currently have available, he had never been institutionalized in any mental health facility. But again, something we can all agree on--Adam Lanza and his ilk are not the kinda people we want having legal access to firearms. It's already been brought up here, but in this particular case parental responsibility certainly comes into play.

Shit, this issue is like a Gordian knot. Every solution leads to a whole new set of problems.
