so I just re read benno h, thread, remeber the great guy who was shanked by his machinist for boring a cast piston tolerance on the beaituful wossner forged?

well according to hins measured weights

the oem CAST piston is the lightest at 415g without rings, however oem rings are known for being robust and he calculated them to be heavier than others and therefore the cast piston with rings was slightly heavier than the 99mm wossner.

alsio the 99m wossner is a different skirtless racing piston design much like a crf piston per say...

th 98mm was a full skirt or at least had side skirts and weighed MORE than the 99mm

BOTH PISTONS look beitiful and need 3thousands clearance, the 99 can use less at 25.

just thought this would be interesting for anybody who is doing the change

    CAPTAIN? jejeje

    Christian,

I just drop the cylinder and what ever brand piston it may be, Wiseco, JE or Wossner on my machinist's counter and let him do his thing. I've never had a problem with Engine Dynamics work in the thirty years of doing business with Mike. http://www.enginedynamics.com/

    OH I KNOW

    that place rocks!

just sayin that for those that dont have access to a great machinist or WORSE a damn stubborn one like benno or the one I had to deal with...

you need to clarify and have the piston specs on hand so no douche tells you otherwise!

    jajajaja

    peace:D

The JE I ordered came with all the details for boring, ring gap etc. neatly printed out in the box.
Only way the machinist can screw it up is by not reading it.

Is this true for all piston manufacturers ?

went for a little ride today, need to adjust the accelerator pump but other than that it seems pretty ok. New date for dyno is Tuesday next week.

That is a nice looking XR. I have never been a big fan of blacked out bikes, but you have a good eye for mixing in the colors at just the right combination. Well Done.

The muffler has to be the longest can I have ever seen on an exhaust...

    Slowly

Currently have no shed to work in so I have to do my work in the yard and the weather is, let's say, unsupportive...

Btw, you were right, the hex in the statorcover plug is a really shitty fit, it's not metric

    Thanks.

Its a XR650R can.In fact its the original size, but its the different mounting points makes it come out a lot more. Because this engine was built for supermoto, i didnt cut the exhaust or i would loose power on the top end.

Is it a used, wallowed out cap?

Mt Snap On 10mm, 3/8" drive socket works just fine on all of the bikes that have come through here.

    It is used, yes.

Wouldn't say wallowed out, but the corners have a little bit of damage, apparently that makes the difference then.

Ohwell, still better than the previous one

Yeah actually, now I remember I'm pretty sure he was in Brisbane too. Seeing as how I've only found one mob who would bore it for me, I hope it's not the same ones as benno h used!

Of course this is all theoretical if I end up going with that one of steves...we'll see.

    Cheers for the discussion,

    John

Haha, well clearly you've never met me Christian!

Bummer you have to sell your bike mate. I just got off mine - only rode to the shops (hasn't seen dirt in over a year :cry )

I'm still not sure what the go was with the machinist. He swore black and blue that he machined all forged pistons (and he sells both Wossner and Wiseco) to 1 thou I think, or 1.5. And the marks on the piston weren't really consistent with a tight bore.

The bottom end bearings were definitely routed, as to how much that contributed to the meltdown, I dunno.

Anyway, the old girl is still running great - even after sitting under the house for months she'll start 2nd kick. Clutch is starting to slip a bit though. I put a new headlight and seatcover on a while ago too:

And that melted Wossner and the matching rod are a garage ornament now ;-)
