If you like to camp "away from it all", but you like to drive there in your car, the National Forests have just what you are looking for.
    "Pick Your Own Spot"

Most of the land in the National Forest is open to camping, free of charge, just for the choosing. You may camp practically anywhere that camping is not specifically prohibited. Simply find the place that suits you, pick your own spot, and camp.
When you pick your spot, make sure that it is
    • On National Forest land. A Forest map may be purchased at most Forest Service offices.
    • At least 100 feet away from streams and lakes, to help protect streamside vegetation, and prevent pollution.
    • Above the high-water mark on all lakes and reservoirs.
    • In a location that does not require you to travel cross country through the woods in your vehicle. Keep your vehicle on the road.
    • Treated well. The beauty of the natural vegetation around your campsite is probably why you chose it. Keep it healthy and beautiful by not cutting anything down, not putting nails into trees, and treading carefully in meadow-like areas.
Restricted Areas - Dispersed camping around the following lakes is restricted because of heavy visitor use and the presence of summer homes: Ice House Reservoir, Gerle Creek Reservoir, Wrights Lake, Echo Lake, Silver Lake, Kirkwood Lake, Woods Lake, Caples Lake, and Stumpy Meadows Reservoir.
Not being in a campground means that there will be:
    • No piped water - Boil any lake, stream, or spring water for 5 minutes, or bring your own water.
    • No restrooms - You will need to make your own toilet area. Pick a place well away from camp, meadows, or any water. Each time, dig a small hole at least six inches deep, but not much more, and cover it well when you are through.
    • No garbage service - Pack out all of your trash. Look around your camping area and pick up all the trash even if it was left behind by someone else. Leave the area looking better than when you arrived.
Boat- In Camping - If you like boat-in camping, it is permitted on Bear River Reservoir, Union Valley Reservoir, Loon Lake, and Hell Hole Reservoir.
Campfires - You may want a campfire for cooking, enjoying its warmth , and roasting marshmallows. For campfires, stoves, lanterns, or barbeques used outside of a recreational vehicle, you are required to have a Campfire Permit. Your responsibility for building and extinguishing your fire safely is explained on the permit and on the Campfire Permit web page. Be aware that as fire danger becomes greater, campfires may be prohibited.
Wood - You are welcome to gather dead and down wood to use for your campfire, but you cannot take it home without a personal use fuelwood permit.
Roads - There are many fine camping spots you can reach on paved and well-graded dirt roads, but there are some rough, steep, or narrow roads that are dangerous for the family car or for bulky recreational vehicles. Make sure the road you plan to take is safe for your kind of vehicle by first talking it over with Forest Service people. Please note that your favorite spots may be accessible only from late spring to early fall due to rain and snow.
Pets - Pets are allowed, but must be kept under control at all times.
    LOW IMPACT CAMPING

Do your part in helping to preserve the natural setting and quality of your favorite forest areas by practicing low impact camping techniques.
For more information about outdoor ethics, visit the Leave No Trace, Inc. website: [IMG]
    SAFE CAMPFIRES

Camping often involves a toasty warm campfire. Be safe and legal with your fire. Check out our Campfire Permit page for more information. [IMG]
    CURRENT CONDITIONS

Before you leave for your adventure, check the current conditions for campground status, road status and fire restrictions to ensure a safe and fun trip! [IMG]

I like the idea of that. After Steve rode over the curb/dirt, then another curb grass sidewalk curb street he stopped somehow hidden in darkness as we flew by unable to see him and he unable to see us in blur we missed eachother.

That was one hell of a short after dinner night ride.

I may visit a ranger station this weekend and pick up a fire permit with Soji and take him out to the water and explore a future camp spot for later this year (if the trail is open).

    A) Layne, you know as well as any one occupying space on this planet that those are not my rules, they are rules established at the highest level.

    b) where was the "y"?

    C) both bikes "trying" to catch me are considerably faster than the old clackity dr.

    D) at no time did I exceed the posted speed limit

    E) I was dead tired and wanted to get home, so the double back lie in wait trick, although succesfully deployed in the past was not available.

    F) you forgot about rule #3 Lee must flee at the tee.

your talents for details are dizzying:norton have you considered a position with the government?

thanks for the update, i would like to leave from fresno about 600am, the ride up the way were going can be pretty long and i would like to get there before dark.

food, nobody has chimed in yet on the food issue, we will be close to civilization so maybe we dont have to worry about cooking and such.

for gearing i have ordered a 50 tooth sprocket for the dr, and am looking for a 14 tooth, does anyone have a front sprocket from a dr that is off the bike so i can look at it?:ear

A little info about the 14 tooth......it uses a 2 bolt plate to attach the same manner as stock or uses circlips like a lot of dirt bikes do (all depends on where you order it from) Procycle uses a plate & kientech uses circlips. Mine is still attached to the bike, but I can get a pic when I go home for lunch if that would help? 14/50 gearing = tree stump pulling monster or really heavy trials bike:D Sweeeeet!!!

Campsites for Rubicon (If doing the dispersed camping):

    Requirements:
    1. Must be in the Eldorado National Forest
    2. Must be 100' from water.
    3. If camping near the truck/tailer: (Suggest location similar to this)
      1. The truck and trailer must be parked within one car length of a forestry MVU approved road or trail, and may not impeed traffic.
        1. Additionally the motorcycles must also stay within one BIKE length from the trail.
      2. Must be easy enough of a road for my truck to get there pulling a trailer.
      3. That hardest part is going to be making sure we all meet up somewhere. Perhaps we should designate a time and a location to meet somewhere along Highway 50 (where we know we will have cell reception) to lead in stragglers.
        1. Alternatively, if you Ironman riders are determined to come in on the Lake Tahoe side you could meet us here and we could ride back to camp from their. A little more chance we miss you this way... But more fun for the 4x4ers undoubtedly since we are able to hop on the iron horses and meet you there after setting up a campsite.
I have a call into the ranger station now, they are going to get back to me. I asked them where the closest camp spot to the trail head I could get to in my truck pulling a trailer. The lady was really nice, said she would have someone that has been on the trail call me back.

    All sound good so far?

Food section added. I am equally happy eating trail mix or steaks. Both have advantages, but the less time we spend making food the more time for riding.

    ~

Agree simple on the food unless we have a camp cook volunteer. I would prefer premade easy cold sandwich trail mix frozen water/drinks drink as they melt. Can food, heat on exhaust. Cheese/meat jerky Hauled up in truck & we pack in on our bikes each day. a restaurant here and there...
Camping near Tahoe would be good & ride to Rubicon. Or Loon lake camp ground
