I forgot to send you the pics but I finally mounted that race light up on my Tdub. I don't know why, but it kept blowing bulbs and/or fuses so I took it off. I will save it for my yet to be purchased rally bike.
any progress on the bike build? I been working on my dodge 12 valve flatbed since my f650 is all done.
heres a pick of my dodge after i changed from a dually to single rear wheel and welded up a flatbed for it.
Sweet truck! I had a wood (2x12's) flatbed when I was building my sailboat and it was so much better than the rusty bed for hauling stuff. I almost built another one when I was working as a carpenter. I wanted a crew cab so that I could remove the rear seat and build in side opening tool boxes on one side and a secure spot on the other side for my compressor and more tools. That way I didn't need a box on the bed and I could lock it up... Then I got smart and realized I was getting too old to work construction outside and needed to learn an "indoor" trade. Now I build large projects like bridges, docks, and so on... in my computer. (I do computer design/drafting at an engineering company) Funny that you should ask about my progress today because it was yesterday that I finally put the Wee beast on the build table. I have been working on the '71 Triumph TR6C engine for my Rickman project but the machine shop is waiting for the new pistons and a few other parts they need to finish their part of the rebuild so I had some time. It is much too heavy for me to get it up the ramp by myself so I used my hoist to pick it up. :eek1 My dogs assisted you can see. I put the rollers under the build table and pushed it under the bike: In the foreground you can see the TW wheel that is going on. Then put it back where it goes and ready to start the tear-down: Which I started today! Man this thing is a top heavy pig. :eek1 I have to remove the exhaust system so I can build a support for the bike that will let me remove the wheels and forks. This puppy is such a pain to work on compared to my DR650. So much plastic, so many heavy brackets that hold things on, so much you have to take apart just to get to a bolt to remove something else. It's all coming off though and most of it will NOT be going back on. Ever. Tomorrow I continue the dissection and build the support and if all goes well, remove the forks and wheels. Then I can start measuring the TW wheel to see what it is going to need. I will be asking for your suggestions soon!
Dang that's going to take some work! Yea let me know how it goes and if you need any info of pics. Can't wait to see the progress!
I just stumbled upon this thread and I am in awe of your bike kubiaks. I have many fond memories of owning a TW when I was younger and had always wished that there would be a bigger and better version available, and you sir have brought this to life and made it a reality. I currently have a DR 650 in my stable and was thinking that this might be a nice project to try out myself. Could you please tell me what the modified width of your rear wheel is as well as the stock width of the front TW wheel. Thanks you once again for sharing the metamorphosis of this awesome project. Rod
First I had a TW and an f650 and had to fight myself not to combine the two. Now I have a TW and a wee and must fight myself to not combien the two!!
hi, the rear wheel is the stock tw 4.5x14 rim and the front i laced up a 18x2.50 rim to a yzf hub. i bet it would work good on a air cooled dr650!
Thanks kubiak but I was wondering about the actual width of both wheel assemblies front and rear between the swing arm and between the forks. Thanks Rod
Ok. I will get a measurement for you tomorrow at the shop.so the width of the widest part or the sidewall of the tires right?
No, I would just like the the actual width of both complete wheel assemblies that you are running including axle spacers ect . So basically the inside width of both your swing arm and front forks so that I can determine if I can build a similar set up for my DR using the stock DR front and rear suspension components. Thank you Sir, I promise that I am not trying to be a pain on purpose. I just love what you have done here and want to get some measurements so that I will know before hand what type of fabrication or design obstacles I might have to overcome for a similar set up on my DR. Thanks Again. Rod
ok i got some measurements, the front inside forks have 5 1/2 inches of room for the yz front wheel and axle spacers. the front tire width is 4 inches at the widest sidewalls which is a 4.10x18 shinko 244. on the rear there is 9 1/2 inches between the swingarm at the axle and the rear tw tire width is 7 inches overall sidewall to sidewall. hope this helps and let me know if you need more info. thanks!
Dirtyrod, Keep in mind that while the swingarm may be wide enough, the tire needs to clear the chain also. The side knobs can be shaved if necessary and that might give enough room. I don't remember if I slid my TW wheel/tire in the DR swingarm or not. Hope it will fit for you!
More of a trail atv tire, but I use the sti black diamond xtr radial. dot approved and trail capable. I have mine on a 12 inch atv rim on a tw hub modded to accept the atv rim from a tri z 250
