Well coming home from my trip I learned a lot about my bike.... some things I hate..... and some things I love.... Despite all the work I have done... I ain't done yet! Things on the list: 1) Magura Hydro Clutch 2) 990/950 Front Brake Assembly 3) Handlebars - Pro Tapers 4) Woody's 18" rear - Tubeless 5) Single Front Headlight 6) High Fender Mod 7) TT tank gas cap modification - so I don't need a key for the thing 8) Keyless gas cap on the bike 9) Ditch Panniers - GL with a small Pelican top box 10) Possible Single Rotor Conversion Front 11) OHLINS 12) General Weight Reduction - Goal is the 350 mark
I've been thinking about the Magura too... What is #2? Having the Woody's tubless is awesome. What's the difference between 7 and 8? Ohlins rock! At least my rear does. I want Ohlins fork internals too!!
#2 gets rid on the urine sample cup 7 and 8 - the TT tank has a locking cap so I plan to get rid of that and 8 is the under seat OEM bmw tank I plan to make keyless as well Haven't pulled the trigger quite yet on the ohlins but its looking like the TTX or a KTM 990 front end conversion.... thoughts?
It's fairly common for 990 owners to have considerable work done on their forks. I'd just go with the Ohlins TTX. You'll probably pay less in the end and get a better suspension.
Can you give more details on this? Sounds like something a lot of us would be interested in! Why the TTX instead of the NIX? I've seen a lot more of the NIX around, so I'm curious.
+1 on both of these. I have tried many times to find a set of RXV fork internals to convert mine like Gangplank did, but haven't been able to. Seems that would net the same results as the Ohlins (or at least close to it) at much less cost.

Love the mods you've done. Very inspiring. Oh to have a real shop at my disposal. My solution to that problem is a DR 650 Fantastic, reliable, easy to work on, easy to get parts for, and bullet proof. Modding one out right now for a Road of Bones "vacation" after a contract in a very remote location in the Kuril Islands. Love the F8 but it's about a heavy pig and doesn't really feel much lighter than the 1200, especially when you get it truly airborne. Kudos to anyone that perseveres in muscling it through a RTW ride. After a couple years with mine I really really really want a long distance adventure touring bike that is a hundred or so pounds lighter, at least light enough to easily jump stumps on.
One thing I thought about on my lunch ride today: wind noise. I have noticed for a while that the wind noise in my right ear always seems louder than on the left. Because of this thread, I was looking at the urine cup and wondered if that's the cause of the extra wind noise on the right. I duct taped a piece of cardboard over the area to smoth the air flow. On the ride back to work: LESS NOISE. Much less. Less wind noise would thus appear to be another benefit of going to the KTM master cylinder.

I wish you luck with the 350lb goal. I shaved over 50lbs off mine and still came in right at 500lb fueled. 350lbs would likely mean no crash bars, skid plates, hand guards, fairings etc. Even then I don't think it's possible. Looking at Diesel Boys DIY cam chain thread, the motor weighed 140lbs without fluids. 210lbs for the rest of the bike and fluids... that's a tough one! Kudos to you if you can pull it off! Even 400lb ready to ride would be a huge achievement. Good luck.
